@gautamcgoel It has happened in the UK —particularly if the student can't explain and justify their work at the viva. Most often, the student must do corrections and resubmit after a year. In rare cases, the student was forced to drop out with an MPhil.
@micahgoldblum@togelius Some countries, e.g. Sweden, lack the dual-funding system US and UK has. If you don't have research funds, you may have less than 25% of your time in research unless you apply and get faculty funding. On the other hand, you can skip teaching completely!
Great past couple of days in Stockholm, meeting @SandorAlbrecht & rest of WALP board for the final review of the RAIN project + #SAIS2022!
Happy to see the successful end of the project - our #AI assessment tool is coming out soon through @verAIAB!
And as @j2bryson has been saying, we should be talking about regulating software instead of constantly trying to define what AI is, opening loopholes and creating confusion
Can we call AI "software 2.0" as @karpathy suggested?
We would avoid so many useless debates, misconceptions and misleading claims. Machine learning is just a transformative new way of building software, not terminator/gods/conscious beings!

I am recruiting for *two* PhD students to work on field swarm robotics. A great opportunity to work on real-world swarms (Leo Rovers) in lovely countryside.
Have also set up a new website, details here 🙂👉: https://t.co/SDki2GNnkx
Please RT/share with students you know!
For the third time, @FTC has forced a company to destroy algorithms built with data gathered deceptively. Here's why it's a sign that algorithmic destruction is now a standard way the FTC will penalize companies. @jevanhutson @EPICprivacy@privacyforum

ICYMI: Twitter conducted one of the largest platform audits ever (randomized trial on 58 million users) to assess "political bias" of their algorithm. In 6 of 7 countries, "the mainstream political right enjoys higher algorithmic amplification than the mainstream political left."
I am the author of this game, well much younger version of me during high school, written entirely in 6502 assembly, fitting within the 8KB RAM of the original PET. You might be able to guess my age…
"to get to human-level intelligence, you need an agent that is actively learning while being immersed in a physical and cultural environment which is strongly influencing the developmental trajectory."
Interesting discussion on gradient descent and knowledge by @jcbaillie
@Reviewer_No_2 @DrCarlottaBerry @seis_matters @Nature I would go as far as calling it an attack on academic freedom, given the pensions, pay gap, etc.
I am grateful for landing a 75-25 research-teaching job in Sweden. ;-)
