Every Student Deserves a Fresh Start

Some students carry the burden of a bad reputation. Be the teacher who gives them a fresh start. Be the teacher who sees in them the potential that their parents see. You can be the teacher who helps them turn the corner.

As teachers look at class rosters before the school year begins, some names immediately stand out.

"Oh, I taught his older brother. He's probably just as bad."

"I've heard about her. I hear her parents are difficult too."

It's easy for reputations, gossip, and hearsay to shape our expectations before we've ever met a student.

To be fair, some students have made poor choices in the past. Some have earned a reputation they wish they didn't have.

But a new school year should also be a new beginning.

I have always appreciated the teachers who refuse to let yesterday define tomorrow. They ignore the labels. They set high expectations. They choose to believe that this year can be different.

Those teachers give students something priceless: the opportunity to build a new reputation and write a new story.

Every student deserves that chance.

After all, every one of us has made mistakes. Every one of us has needed grace. Every one of us has benefited from someone who believed in us when others didn't.

Be that teacher.

You may be the person who helps a student finally turn the corner.
