It'll be no news, I'm sure, to my followers that I'm annoyed by this interview. It's fake on several levels at once. Firstly, of course, because putting questions about civilizational decline, different religious mentalities and so on to someone like Nolan is fake in the first place. Nolan makes capeshit. He is barely literate. Getting him to say embarrassing things by posing a few well-turned questions is like besting a six-year-old girl in an MMA cage-match.

But it's fake on a second level in that the questions are not really that well-turned. The fact that they are perceived as such is a second damning testimony to how low Western cultural standards have sunk - right after the damning testimony of movies like Nolan's being taken seriously in the first place.

There really is no such thing as an intelligent Chinese - and I speak as someone who is fluent in Mandarin and who has studied at several of China's leading educational institutions. What the Chinese have to offer, intellectually, is at best a convincing facsimile of intelligence, put together by a process of bricolage (alternatively denominable as "culture-industrial espionage") powered by their true national fortes of assiduity, obedience and monkey-like imitativity.

I honestly do get painful flashbacks, when I listen to the questions she's prepared, to all the hours and days and weeks that my patience was tried by these people at BeiDa and SOAS and many other places.

A question like the one she asks about "atonement" - which appears to have elicited especially loud gasps of admiration from the intellectual aristocracy of X - is not an intelligent question. It's what results when the human product of a culture based entirely on the principle of filial obedience follows, with a blind punctiliousness that is indeed (thankfully) still beyond the powers of most Westerners even at this advanced point in the process of our sinification, the stipulations of the standard instruction manual on how to compose an intelligent question.
