Anyone enjoy have fresh strawberries in January?

Mexico is the source of 99% of U.S. winter strawberry imports -- meaning the fruit is harvested between November 1 and March 31. It supplements Florida's production.

It isn’t just strawberries. In January the tomato, cucumber, pepper, berry, and grape aisle is an import aisle.

Mexico sends us about three-quarters of our fresh vegetable imports, and 90% of imported tomatoes.

Mexico takes about one-sixth of U.S. diesel exports — roughly 220,000 barrels a day. Latin America as a whole takes on the order of half our diesel exports.

Winter grapes are 99% from Peru, Chile, and Mexico.

Chile — our No. 2 diesel export customer — is also what puts cherries and blueberries in the store in January.

Fresh winter produce is harvested and hauled using diesel powered equipment.

We are about to export ban a fuel shock into the countries that stock a good portion of our winter produce sections.

A ban on US diesel exports will translate into much higher grocery prices in a few weeks and significant shortages in the fresh produce sections.

That would be the Democrat party that told you it was for climate change.

We were domestically energy dominant and Democrats implemented restrictions and regulations. So spare me your outrage that it’s a 5 month war causing this.

Blue states didn’t “transition.” They shut the plants that make the gas.

Martinez — 161k — gone (2020)
Rodeo / SF — 120k — gone (2024)
Phillips 66 LA — 139k — gone (2025)
Valero Benicia — 145k — gone (2026)

That’s half a million barrels a day in one state.

Pennsylvania
PES Philadelphia — 335k — gone after the 2019 fire.

New Jersey
Eagle Point, Perth Amboy, Port Reading, Paulsboro — all dark.

Then they act shocked when the West Coast price spikes and a tanker from Asia is the backup plan.
You can convert a refinery to a press release. You cannot convert a press release back into gasoline.

Today, among thousands of people crossing the Mackinac Bridge, I watched two firefighters in full gear running that bridge carrying flags.✨🇺🇸✨
And something about it hit me differently.

Remember earlier this year, when the Trump admin said the quiet part out loud about Greenland and half the Western press treated it like a cartoonish land grab? The coverage was almost entirely about manners. Denmark was insulted. NATO was “at risk.” Greenlanders were “not for sale.”

Some of us talked about the geostrategic strategy going on here but people were too caught up in the passions of the topic to listen.

9 months later, the same institutions are writing about China’s Arctic shortcut as if they just discovered the world map. The New York Times is now explaining that Beijing has launched the first regular container service across the Northern Sea Route, the so-called Polar Silk Road, and asking whether the voyage of the Dubai Tower is commerce or a geopolitical flex.

Bro I was saying that in JANUARY. Could've been real useful for this explainer to come out then in the heat of the debate, no?

China is a self-declared “near-Arctic state” more than 800 miles from the Arctic Circle. That tells you everything does it? It has run joint Arctic patrols with Russia and has turned a seasonal ice corridor into a viable alternative to Suez and Hormuz. Russia controls the permits and the icebreakers while China supplies the cargo, the capital, and the long game.

This is a northern flank opening above North America.

Meanwhile, let's take a look at Greenland's neighbor, Canada! On September 4, Canada held a “defence coordination dialogue” with China, the first since April 2018, when the Meng Wanzhou (Huawei exec) crisis froze the channel. All of this is part of a broader Carney-era pivot to realign with Beijing.

Canada didn't mention anything btw until Beijing printed the read-out.

You can oppose annexation, oppose coercion, and still admit the media sequence did not serve the public interest. The US has to start building a political community inside Greenland with control, basing rights in perpetuity, and resource jurisdiction. What the US needs is the ability to deny hostile infrastructure built inside Greenland.

The Northern gateway to the Western Hemisphere cannot depend on Danish autonomy while China and Russia industrialize the ice and Canada reopens defense talks with Beijing. Too much is at stake.

By the way China's ambitions on the polar Silk Road have been public for more than 8 years now. There's no excuse not to publish this kind of investigative reporting when it was salient and relevant.

HUSBAND: "Not one. And we keep shutting down the ones we've got. California alone is closing about eighteen percent of its refineries!"

WIFE: "Who shuts down a refinery when gas costs this much?!"

HUSBAND: "The Democrats. They spent fifty years regulating them to death - permits, lawsuits, fees, and a promise to ban gas cars. Who's going to spend a billion dollars building something Washington swears it's going to outlaw?"

WIFE: "So it was never really about Iran."

HUSBAND: "Iran nudges the barrel a little. But the real story? We've got more oil than any country on Earth and we STILL import six million barrels a day, because we can't refine our own."

WIFE: "That is absolutely insane."

HUSBAND: "Here's the good news. Trump just broke ground on the first new refinery in almost fifty years, down in Texas."

WIFE: "So I've been blaming Trump and HE is the only one actually fixing it?"

Iran War or no Iran War, the US needs more oil refineries. Push existing refineries to work even harder is risky and will only serve as a band-aid for a very short period of time. It is not any sort of long-term solution. The administration should be creating a permanent regulatory environment that would allow for more refineries and in areas other than just the Gulf Coast.
