Are We Living In A Simulation? Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, think so....
Elon Musk, Stephan Hawking, and several other serious types have postulated that we are living in a simulation and a large number of us are NPCs (non-playing characters).
Nick Bostrom, an Oxford professor is one of the biggest proponents of the Simulation Hypothesis
The simulation hypothesis is a philosophical argument that posits that our reality may be a computer simulation.
The argument is based on the following premises:
- It is possible to create simulated realities.
- If it is possible to create simulated realities, then there will likely be many of them.
- If there are many simulated realities, then it is more likely that we are living in one of them than in the base reality.
As video games and the metaverse becomes more and more real, it is conceivable that we are able to create a simulation that can't be distinguished from reality. If humans can potentially do this, why not some super-intelligent species in whose simulation we currently exist?
The most compelling argument for the simulation hypothesis is if it is indeed possible to simulate our universe then the likelihood of us being in a "base reality" (that's the real, un-simulated universe) is pretty low.
This is because there are many more simulated realities that could be created than there are base realities. For example, if there are 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe, and each galaxy contains 100 billion stars, and each star has 10 planets, then there are trillions of trillions of planets that could support life. If even a small fraction of these planets develop intelligent life, then there could be trillions of trillions of simulated realities.
Of course, the obvious argument against this hypothesis is that there is no evidence proving that we are in a simulation. Similar to the God theory, religions can claim that god exists but we have no evidence to prove that he/she exists!
We can also speculate about what our simulators had in mind if we are indeed in a simulation.
- If we are living in a simulation, then it is possible that the simulators have created us with certain goals in mind. For example, they may be trying to learn about human behavior or to create a more perfect world?
- It is also possible that the simulators are not aware of our existence. They may be running millions or billions of simulations at the same time, and we may just be one of them. 😢
Of course, we can hypothesize that there may not be a way for us to break out of the simulation we live in, which is why we may never be able to prove or disprove this theory😉
But yeah, it's not impossible that most of us are just not-playing characters in some video game universe run by aliens!! 😂🤣😱
