One of the more sinister trends of the past 40 years has been a cultural taboo against having any kind of intellectual life. We’re bombarded with relentless propaganda about how knowing things makes you a nerd and loser. Curiosity is empowering, & they don’t want you empowered.
Men are suffering because they struggle to see women as anything but sexual partners. Our culture is suffering an epidemic of loneliness because we’ve elevated romance to the highest form of love. We’ve forgotten the joys of deep, committed friendship.
“I feel that if we don't take seriously the ways in which racism is embedded in structures of institutions, if we assume that there must be an identifiable racist who is the perpetrator, then we won't ever succeed in eradicating racism.”
— Angela Davis
The attacks on Johnson County do nothing to help Iowans with the issues that really matter. Iowans want decency, good jobs and lower costs. We want to work together to deal with issues that matter to ALL Iowans.
A lot of people are under the mistaken impression that progress means advances in tech. Real progress is kids who are literate, free meals for public school students, a culture in which human art & poetry are celebrated. We're regressing rapidly & the only way forward is to read.
People say there’s no magic in books but the fact that you can string words together to create a series of visions in someone else’s brain is still our greatest achievement as a species.
Friendly reminder: Jesus didn't warn us about LGBTQIA+ or atheists. He warned us about religious people who love power more than truth.
I hope this rings a bell.
Haunted by something I read this morning in a book on the Vikings: “A society without books is ... a society without a history.” We have no idea what we’re throwing away when we abandon literacy as a culture. The rejection of reading is the birth of a new dark age.
Jesus is risen and His rising is our reminder that injustice never has the final word.
The Resurrection is God’s declaration that death, hatred, and oppression cannot hold dominion over a people committed to love, truth, and righteousness.
I rise in the truth my parents taught me: that love is stronger than hate, justice is stronger than fear, and hope is stronger than despair.
On this Resurrection Sunday, we are called to rise with Christ
to rise for the poor
to rise for the marginalized
to rise for the brokenhearted
to rise for justice
Because the empty tomb is not just a miracle,
it is a mandate
Let’s rise and do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.
