$DEWA: A Sell for Me

Next stock: $DEWA.

For me, it is a sell.

The reason is actually very simple. Whenever I see a stock being aggressively promoted by Tjoe Ay, my instinct is to examine the other side of the trade and ask one question: who is providing the exit liquidity?

We have seen versions of this movie before: Bukalapak, the digital-bank mania, and various conglomerate stocks. The recurring pattern, in my view, is powerful narratives attracting retail money, valuations becoming increasingly detached from fundamentals, and passive or index-related flows helping sustain the trade.

When those passive flows disappear, somebody still has to hold the stock.

Be very careful that somebody is not you.

I would also be cautious about calling any firm a “Ponzi scheme” without hard evidence. My criticism is simpler and, frankly, more important for investors: I am deeply skeptical of an investment approach that appears overly dependent on narrative, liquidity, index inclusion and a continuous supply of new buyers rather than sustainable earnings and cash-flow generation.

And if someone claims to possess extraordinary stock-picking ability, the obvious question is whether that ability survives in deep, liquid and highly competitive markets where there is far less room for liquidity dynamics to dominate fundamentals. The US market is available to everyone. Ask her to venture to US market.

Ultimately, never outsource your thinking to a famous investor, fund manager, influencer, broker, or promoter, including me.

Understand the business. Study the cash flow. Question the valuation. Understand who owns the stock and why.

Most importantly, always ask:

If everyone is being told to buy, who is selling to them?

Be very careful who you listen to.
