@gander_nikki This is great to hear! I have definitely heard some positive reports over the last few weeks of schools adapting valuable sustainable practices into their routines. The cooking classes are a great idea! Were these conducted by the classroom teacher?
Sustainability extends beyond a classroom level. Schools must adapt a wholistic approach to the issue. What types of whole school approaches have you seen that concern sustainable practices? #UoNTeach
@KaylaWicks8 I also think there are great opportunities to reflect on the Quality Teaching Framework within this article - and in consideration of our research towards a developed unit plan. Unfortunately I can't name them all within the word count - but here is a table! #UoNTeach
@CarlyHarris12 Great insight Carly! I agree about the considerations that need to be made when approaching families with the issue. Maybe introducing these as an alternative to students and their families would be a successful way of approaching it - rather than just stating the issue.
So much waste is found in students' lunchboxes everyday. Can we challenge schools and their families to a free waste day? These lunch skins would be awesome!
@KaylaWicks8 Great idea! Thanks Kayla! i think there is a lot of potential to integrate sustainable issues into persuasive writing tasks across all stages of the syllabus. It would be awesome to organise a guest speaker from this local campaign to talk to students about this issue!
With all the talk about #cleanupaustraliaday2019 and #nationalrecyclingday how can we not look at the great work of this campaign that kicked off right here at our local Newcastle beaches? Interested to find out how you might address this critical issue in your classroom?
Gifting just ONE of these cups educates TEN young people through Take 3 for the Sea school programs.
There are only 360 JOCO cups in this limited edition so with your help that is 3,600 people who will be armed with knowledge... https://t.co/rWpxeyPmQj
@AlastairFrase11 This is a great resource! This will definitely be valuable in the development of my unit. Some great points that would create authentic hands on experiences in the classroom and allow for cross curriculum links. Thanks for sharing!
How great! Adidas are creating shoes that are made from 100% recycled materials. Could we encourage critical/creative thinking of students & have them design their own everyday object from recycled materials they can find and research they undertake? Thoughts? #UoNTeach
@AliceDough89 Great point Alice! I think banning the plastic bags at checkouts was a huge step itself - but it's not the final step. Large grocery stores still provide so much single-use plastic waste. We have a long way to go to reduce this plastic pollution issue!
Thanks for sharing this Zoe! It's shocking!! Supermarkets already have so much unnecessary plastic packaging & now they are giving away small plastic items that are thrown out when interest is lost. Surely we can come up with ideas that encourage sustainable practices? #UoNTeach
@KaylaWicks8 I agree! Great ideas! Thanks for sharing Kayla! I definitely am going into my next practical experience with a better understanding of how to model correct sustainable practices!
As teachers, we are powerful role models. Students are always observing our actions & therefore it is important we not only teach about sustainable practices, but we model them too. What are some practices you will model for your students? A keep cup? Reusable straws? #UoNTeach
@AliceDough89 Couldn't agree more! Statistics like this could be great 'hooks' for a lesson to gauge their attention - or maybe could be used as stimulus material. Thanks for your feedback Alice!
Imagine the impact if those 8 billion people said no to straws? Development and research of a recent sustainability unit plan has taught me the detrimental effects of plastic and the importance of implementing sustainable practices. Will you start saying no to straws? #UoNTeach
This quote will never be over used until people realize that every piece of plastic makes a difference. .
Make a personal commitment to say "no" to plastic straws. Whenever you order a drink, politely request βno straw, please.β Encourage your friends and family to do the same!
@KaylaWicks8 I have heard about these but I haven't seen too many unfortunately. Maybe large grocery chains can introduce these in our fresh food sections with some sort of system where we return them at the checkout? Great step moving forward!
After my latest visit to the shops, I am alarmed at the amount of unnecessary plastic that can be found in our grocery stores!! Could we use this as a stimulus for project based learning in the classroom and encourage students to come up with alternatives? #UoNTeach
@KaylaWicks8 I have only recently come across this idea of 'nude foods'. I love this idea - would be great to hear this concept implemented more often in the future. Thanks for sharing such great ideas!!
@ClaudiaRussell4 Have you heard about @Take3forthesea ? These guys are doing great things in terms of encouraging people to take 3 items of rubbish when visiting our beaches. Imagine the results if everyone did this! Let's get our students on board! https://t.co/T8tAKZt4QS
@KaylaWicks8 Great idea! An issue like this would provide some excellent problem-based learning opportunities in Science & Tech! I imagine developing lessons that has students experimenting with different materials. But maybe the solution is not to have these fresh items packaged at all?
@kyliedbee Wow really! I never knew! Great to see results from initiatives like these. Hopefully these benches become more common in the near future! Imagine how great it would be to introduce this initiative into schools & for students to see the benches they have contributed too!
Have you heard about the Bags to Benches initiative that is happening at UON? I have seen some posters around campus, but I never comprehended how great this trial is until learning about sustainable practices in this assignment! Read more at https://t.co/B4nm9VrEVL #UoNTeach
@Christo52918550 How great is teach starter! I have found come great resources to use in my future teaching practices. Great to see so many ways we can explore sustainability in our classrooms. Thanks for sharing Christopher!
@AliceDough89 After developing a recent unit - I have found myself constantly reflecting on how much plastic waste I was packing in my lunchbox. I've since made changes & encourage others to do the same. This is a great resource to read if you don't know where to start! Thanks for sharing!
@AliceDough89 Have you heard of @Take3forthesea ? They are doing great things in raising awareness about plastic pollution. These guys encourage people to take 3 items of rubbish from our beaches - image the results if everyone did this! Have a look at their website!

@AliceDough89 How great is this!! Maybe schools could introduce concepts like this more often - rather than just once a year? Having this initiative as a regular occurance could get us a little close to it becoming the everyday norm. Thanks for sharing Alice!!
