I respect and appreciate the emotional work our generation is trying to do. But I also can’t ignore what I see. We, and by extension the children born out of us are far more emotionally fragile than the generation that raised us.
We collapse at the slightest inconvenience, strife, or disappointment. Every discomfort feels like a crisis.
Our parents endured things that would send most of us straight into shutdown mode, yet they still showed up, built families, went to work, and kept households standing often with very little or no language for feelings, but an abundance of grit.
So yes, healing matters. Emotional awareness matters. But so does resilience. And in that department, we pale in comparison.
I salute the die-hard, stubborn, unglamorous, vok-vok makunyiwe resilience of our parents’ generation.
Let’s build our resilience asseblief. Life favours the resilient.
