Internationalist fighter Kōzō Okamoto has died.

Kōzō Okamoto was a Japanese revolutionary who joined the Japanese Red Army and allied with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in the 1970s.

In 1972, he took part in the Lod Airport operation in Israel, in coordination with the PFLP – General Command. He was captured and sentenced to life imprisonment.

In 1985, he was released in a prisoner exchange and moved to Lebanon, where he was granted political asylum. Protected by Palestinian factions, he spent the rest of his life as a symbol of international solidarity with Palestine.
He once declared: “I gave my youth to the Palestinian cause. As long as there is oppression, resistance is not only a right, it is a duty.”

يلتحق برفيقيه الشهيدين تسويوشي أوكودايرا (باسم) وياسوكي ياسودا (صلاح)، اللذين استشهدا خلال تنفيذ عملية مطار اللد في ٣٠ أيار ١٩٧٢، وفيها أُسر أوكاموتو، قبل أن يُحرّر في عملية الجليل لتبادل الأسرى في ٢١ أيار ١٩٨٥.

وتعرض أوكاموتو خلال فترة أسره في سجون الاحتلال للتعذيب، وقضى معظم سنوات الاعتقال في العزل والحبس الانفرادي.

وكان يعيش في لبنان (كلاجئ سياسي) - برعاية الجبهة الشعبية لتحرير فلسطين - قبل رحيله، في ٢٣ يوليو ٢٠٢٦
