TIL of SlopCodeBench, a benchmark for how coding agents slowly turn codebases into slop.
instead of single shot tasks like swe-bench, the agent gets several tasks one after another so eg bad architectural decisions early on lead to worse results for the later tasks.
compared to 473 human written python repos, agent code is:
- 2.3x more verbose (redundant)
- 2x more eroded
- degrades 5-7x faster per change than humans do across their git history
we are now anti slop engineers
It's not just the exploitation of a tragedy.

the difference is that we don’t *hype* giving 12 year-olds bulldozers.
*of course* it’s a kind of user error when a model destroys all of user’s data and they didn’t have a backup. that’s the point.
vibe coding without considerable experience is like driving without a license.
Sustainable organisations undergoing radical restructuring will be factoring the strain of working with agents into their processes and expectations. Assuming AI enables a 10x boost to developer productivity with half the manpower is a recipe for mass burnout.
"Using coding agents well is taking every inch of my 25 years of experience as a software engineer, and it is mentally exhausting.
I can fire up four agents in parallel and have them work on four different problems, and by 11am I am wiped out for the day.
There is a limit on human cognition. Even if you're not reviewing everything they're doing, how much you can hold in your head at one time. There's a sort of personal skill that we have to learn, which is finding our new limits. What is a responsible way for us to not burn out, and for us to use the time that we have?" @simonw

As we say: if you have nothing to say, stay silent.
This is why my blog did not receive any new post since I started working on Flutter a few years ago.
But now I have an interesting story to tell about migrating from #Xamarin to #flutter. #flutterdev
