Scientists have created one of the most detailed 3D reconstructions of a human cell (eukaryotic cell) ever produced.

He used fresh data from two major sky surveys to show the universe could stop expanding in about 11 billion years, then start collapsing into a Big Crunch. All 3 models are testable within our lifetimes.
Nobel laureate Roger Penrose thinks the universe runs in infinite loops. Each one starts with a Big Bang, expands for billions of years until all matter gets swallowed by black holes, and those black holes slowly evaporate until the universe “forgets” how big it is. Then it resets. New bang. New loop. In a March 2025 paper, Penrose and physicist Krzysztof Meissner found a direct numerical match between the predicted mass of black holes from the previous loop and actual hot spots in the cosmic microwave background (the faint glow left over from the early universe). A 2020 study said the signal might be random noise. But the match keeps getting tighter as the data improves.
Then there’s the mirror universe idea. In 2018, physicists Latham Boyle and Neil Turok proposed the Big Bang as a mirror point, not a starting line. On our side, time moves forward, and matter dominates. On the other side, time runs backward, and antimatter dominates. Together, the two halves follow a rule in physics called CPT: if you flip charge, mirror space, and reverse time, everything should still work the same way. Their model says dark matter is a specific type of particle, a neutrino, with a mass you can calculate from theory. Two major telescopes, the Euclid satellite and Vera C. Rubin Observatory, are testing this prediction right now.
A June 2025 paper went even further: our entire universe might be the inside of a black hole. A massive clump of matter collapsed, reached a point where quantum physics (the rules governing the smallest particles) wouldn’t let it shrink any further, bounced, and what came out the other side was a whole expanding universe. No new physics needed. Just the rules we already know applied to extreme conditions.
Three models. A loop, a mirror, and a bounce inside a black hole. None of them agrees with each other, but they all point to the same conclusion: something existed before the Big Bang, and we’re getting close to figuring out what.
