Africa should help shape the future of AI weather forecasting—not just consume technologies developed elsewhere.
Excited to partner with @OxfordPhysics and welcome Dr Shruti Nath as Research Lead to help build the next generation of forecasting systems for Africa.
Actuaries Professor Rendani Mbuvha and Dr Nadine van der Walt demonstrate the @ActuarialSa Climate Index at #ASSA2025ZA. The index aims to facilitate informed risk management by insurers, medical aid schemes, policymakers, and other stakeholders who are likely to suffer losses as a result of changing climate patterns. The index is available here: https://t.co/A2YgCEjx8i
Today we’re thrilled to announce that real-time and historical AI-based weather forecasts from @Google’s WeatherNext suite of models are now available on Earth Engine and BigQuery. Anyone can access and use these data for research, analysis and operational decision making, which we hope will help accelerate research and development in the weather and climate community.
You can check out the AI-powered forecasts here: https://t.co/Dj1lq1VyZ4
Announcing:🌍 AfriNet: Connecting Africa Through Climate Data 🌱
AfriNet is an AfriClimate AI initiative focused on revolutionizing African climate data collection.
The collected data will be freely available to researchers and students in Africa.

“Traditional weather forecasting models rely on numerical parameterisations of various processes in the atmosphere, land, and sea. This is complex to explicitly model, causing these models to run slowly and exhibit systematic biases,” @rendx & @AmalNammouchi
