For nearly three decades, @reneemshaw has made Kentucky’s public conversation better.

Anyone who sat across from her, including members of the Senate Majority Caucus, could trust she had done her homework. Her questions were tough, but fair. She listened closely, pressed when needed and never made the interview about herself. Even when the subject was difficult or the disagreement sharp among her guests, Renee kept the conversation thoughtful and civil.

We need more Renee Shaws, but, at least for now, we will have one less.

Her professionalism carries beyond the studio. Those of us fortunate enough to work with her know Renee is responsive, considerate and genuinely kind. She treats people with respect, whether the cameras are rolling or not.

Renee has a career that is much more than covering Kentucky public affairs. She set the standard for how it is to be done.

Thank you, Renee, for everything you have given Kentucky. We wish you nothing but happiness in whatever comes next.

When I think of the voices who have shaped Kentucky political journalism over my 40 years, names like Jack Brammer, @markhebert502 , @ruralj , John Cheves, and @TomLoftus_CJ come to mind. For much of that time, it was largely a men’s club.

But @reneemshaw was the Queen.

For 29 years, she brought a rare combination of grace, grit, fairness, and intellectual honesty to Kentucky politics. She could ask hard questions and speak truth to power without becoming partisan, performative, or making herself the story.

Renee treated people across the political spectrum with respect without ever confusing respect with timidity. She was straightforward, substantive, and unmistakably Kentucky.

Kentucky is better because Renee Shaw spent nearly three decades helping us understand ourselves, our politics, and one another. She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, and some very big shoes to fill.
