Dear international friends:
After talking with bunch of girls, reading through their comments and quote twts, the Korean parents and adults are not take things seriously. This is not only a Korean societal issue but also a patriarchal family system in SK. They value sons over daughters. Even when there is family sexual abuse they cover and protect the son then blame/shun the daughter.
Many Korean parents think this is “play or for fun”. I find this mindset very disturbing. Therefore the girls can’t and won’t discuss with their own parents. Any issue will be dismissed. I won’t say all parents, that is too much generalization.
However, these Korean girls are following me and asking for help from a woman who is in the USA instead of turning to their own elders in Korea. I will do what I can to help and bring awareness internationally as these girls are young enough to be my own daughter. I hope many of you reading this can advocate for these helpless youngsters.
These girls are planning a hashtag event to force Korean media to cover the news and I truly hope you and your followers can all participate as Korean Gov is not helping them. Some of the boys who are members of the telegram room are minors themselves and Korean law does not punish minors.
As a result, knowing there won’t be any repercussion, they are continuing. Those who are adults know not much will affect them legally. This was what happened with first Nth room, only 2 or 3 were prosecuted. Others members of the rooms went unpunished and never prosecuted. This vicious cycle must stop.
I was once an English account. When I started uploading info about US or international uni scholarships, job opportunities abroad, my following jumped. It was mostly Korean women. 90% of my followers are from Korea and 96% are women in 20’s-30’s. At first I thought they wanted better education and career. I was wrong.
They want to escape Korea. This shocked me. These girls wanting to leave their own home country saddened me but also angered me. Why should they be driven off of their own country to feel safe? They have every right to be treated as human being instead of sex objects and feel protected. These are middle, high school, uni girls. Some boys actually used pics of their own family members face for sexual content. Over 200,000 boys and men are involved in these rooms which is more than the entire country’s birthrate in Korea this year. All of them should receive some punishment or this type of sexual harassment will continue in Korea.
I ask you once again on behalf of these voiceless young Korean girls, please help them when they create a hashtag event. We can be their voice.
Thank you.
From a mother of son and daughter.
