Confirmed: The president of the Victorian RSL says that Welcome to Country will be back in 2027 at the dawn service. 👏🏼
The president highlighted that the few who made a noise didn't even stay for the service.
Good wins again! ✊🏼
I received this message via Instagram DM this week:
“G’Day. I listened to your dialogue on ‘Conversations’ last week… As a retired Mental Health Nurse [NZ Scotland WA] I found your comments interesting… I note you state you are a ‘Proud Nyamal Woman.’ I would remind you half of your genes came from your SCOTTISH FATHER… This, I would suggest is where you gained your inspiration, passion, self belief, and psychological stamina to achieve your goals. Why do you not acknowledge this but always push the indigenous barrel??”
I’m sharing this not because it’s unusual. I’m sharing it because it’s not.
Aboriginal people are the only cultural group in this country whose identity is routinely challenged, questioned, and policed by strangers. If I told you I was Greek, you’d say “that’s great, tell me about it.” If I told you I was Italian, you’d ask where my family was from. But when I say I’m a proud Nyamal woman, I get asked: “Yeah, but how Aboriginal are you?”
This person listened to a single radio interview and decided he knew enough to tell me that my achievements come from my “Scottish side” — not from the culture, community, and identity that has shaped every part of who I am and the work I do. He didn’t just question my identity. He ranked it. He decided which half of me was worth something.
Let me be clear about something. No one gets to allocate where my strength comes from. No one gets to divide me into the parts they’re comfortable with and discard the rest. And no one gets to tell me that I’m “pushing the Indigenous barrel” for being proud of who I am.
This is what identity-policing looks like. It’s not always overt racism. Sometimes it comes wrapped in “I found your comments interesting” and a suggestion that you should be grateful for the “right genes”.
Aboriginal people deal with this constantly. We are asked to justify, quantify, and prove our identity in ways that no other culture in this country is subjected to. And it has real consequences — it undermines cultural identity, it isolates people from community, and it reinforces the very assimilation mindset that once required my mother to attend court in Port Hedland in 1964 just to obtain a citizenship certificate in her own country.
I spoke about this exact issue in conversation with Stan Grant at the Sydney Opera House. The fact that I received this message the same week I posted that video on my platforms tells you everything about how far we still have to go.
I am a proud Nyamal woman. That is not a barrel I push. It is who I am.

We're taking one ball to every outdoor court in the Hawaiian Islands before the season starts.
Impossible? Maybe. But Eddie would go.
Follow the journey. Every shot adds mana, every stop tells a story.

How do you close the gap in Indigenous suicides and mental health?
Identify the unacceptable gaps and fix them…you would think.
Mental health is not even in the close the gap targets.
How has something so fundamental to closing the gap not being achieved?
Your best opportunity of reducing the burden of disease as defined by the World Health Organisation is to “define the problem”-as your first activity.
So if you haven’t defined the problem, then there is no problem.
How can you close a gap if you’re not even measuring a gap?
So how have I through my personal business addressed these unacceptable and critical gaps?
The first is that I designed the first clinically and culturally validated screening tool for at risk Aboriginal people via my PhD in the year 2003.
The second is that I published the first paper on Indigenous youth mental health and suicide behaviours prevalence.
This has all been done through funding it myself.
A sad reality when these two issues are so vital to closing the gap for our highest risk communities.

A coroner has found the death in custody of Heather Calgaret was the preventable result of inappropriately prescribed medication
