India’s banking system is 24×7. Digital banking has expanded rapidly. 24,162 crore UPI transactions, 34.2 crore installations of official mobile-banking apps, 2.60 lakh BC/CSP points and 1.34 lakh PSB ATMs/CRMs. Yet bankers still work 6 days a week. Banking has changed. It’s time for the workweek to change. We demand the implementation of 5-Day Banking.

Banks power India 5 days a week in the demand? No. Bankers ask for 5 Days Banking, with the agreed 40-minute daily adjustment. The proposal has been pending with the Government since the March 2024 settlement. How long must the workforce wait for a settled issue?

Embracing a 5-day banking week allows employees time to upskill, ensuring innovation and better service for all customers. #5DayBankingNow#AIBEA@PMOIndia
Every 24x7 banking service has a banker behind it and a family waiting at home. We agreed to the 5-day week in March 2024 and accepted longer weekday hours. The regulator, the insurer and the Government all work 5 days.
Our demand is just. The delay is not.

Banking services, especially at public sector banks across the country, were impacted on Friday (September 11, 2026) after the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) called a nationwide strike to press for the immediate implementation of a five-day workweek and resolve pending wage-related issues.

“Saturday ko banks band ho gaye, toh banking kaise chalegi?”
Mera sawaal hai—kya aaj banking, bank ki branch se chalti hai?
UPI 24×7 hai.
IMPS 24×7 hai.
NEFT 24×7 hai.
ATM, mobile banking, internet banking—sab available hain.
Toh phir India mein 5-Day Banking kyun nahi?
1 . Productivity.
Bank employees ka kaam sirf cash deposit aur withdrawal nahi hai. Loans, compliance, audits, fraud prevention, targets—pressure enormous hai. Two-day weekend means better-rested employees and potentially better productivity.
2. Work-life balance.
Burnout kam hoga, employee satisfaction aur retention improve ho sakta hai.
3. Cost saving.
Thousands of branches ko Saturday operate karne mein electricity, security, cash management aur manpower ka cost lagta hai.
4. Digital India.
Jab government khud digital payments promote kar rahi hai, toh har Saturday physical branch kholna increasingly less necessary hai.
5. sabse important.
5-day banking ka matlab customers ko kam banking nahi milni chahiye.
Monday to Friday working hours thode extend kiye ja sakte hain, aur essential services digital channels se 24×7 chalti rahengi.
Aur waise bhi, abhi second aur fourth Saturday banks band rehte hain, customers already alternate-Saturday system manage kar rahe hain.
In the age of UPI, banking is no longer a place you go to—banking is a service that follows you 24×7.

Let us all unite.
Bankers deserve two days off per week.
We should also raise voice against discriminatory PLI scheme. All India strike on 11th September.
