Disney criticized for TM of Swahilii phrase "Hakuna Matata" or "no worries." Trademark attorneys may not see the problem, comparing it to "Yahoo" or "Merry Christmas," but the cultural issue is more complicated. Yes, legal - but is it #respectful_IP? See https://t.co/UD1NndLcUI
Delighted to present at this terrific conference. Grateful to @ProfJohanna for the opportunity. Many thanks to all the organizers @QMSchoolofLaw for this excellent event filled with wonderful, thoughtful presentations! #QMIPRI
@ProfJohanna chairs the 2nd panel of the day on Sustainability & Fashion - share your thoughts with our panel members J Janewa Oseille-Tutu and Eden Sarid !#QMIPRI#QMIPRIAC2023@QMIPRI
@CraigCarys this makes me think of your IP and #gender project. I love the use of #IP to promote #humandevelopment as part of #IPsocialjustice. But you make some really thoughtful criticisms in your project. What do the numbers really tell us? #WIPO.
Let’s support women innovators and creators in using intellectual property in their journey from mind to market, close the gender gap, and ensure that they can transform our world

@CJSprigman @Ire_Calboli@DanielGervaisIP Not saying wine GIs are ideal. Just its “authenticity” not offense. France - yes, but also many developing countries for non-wine GIs. @OkyereEwurabena has written about Ghanaian Kente and Tesh Dagne about Ethiopian coffee. U.S also has quite a few GIs now.
@CJSprigman Interesting. I don’t think about offense. It’s about authenticity/dilution style protection. Even if they seem stupid, many countries are finding value in GIs. And some see all IP as stupid. I think @Ire_Calboli@DanielGervaisIP and others have useful detailed scholarship on GIs.

#Walmart sure got slammed over the #Juneteenth ice cream. I get the capitalist instinct to commercialize holidays but promoting relevant black businesses would’ve been a more authentic move. #respect@jotkulture
@Morning_Joe@JoeNBC Thanks for your courage in speaking out about the power of the media and the destructive and divisive force that is FEAR. Fear provoking “Infotainment”is dangerous. We need more conservative public figures to speak out about like you just did.
Thread on what law professors do, for my mother-in-law, who every summer says something like, "wow, how nice! You have nothing to do now that you're not teaching." /1
Congratulations @raceip - well deserved! I had the honor of joining Dean Deidre Keller of @FAMULaw to comment on this book for a symposium hosted by @NewEngLRev This thoughtful book will generate important discussions on #race and #IntellectualProperty for years to come.
Cuz a bunch of kids in fringe chanting “scalp ‘em Indians, scalp ‘em” is honor, right?
And any Natives who attend @pngisd should prolly just accept their classmates dehumanizing them cuz “tradition”, right?
Shame on @DisneyParks hosting this. Nostalgic racism is RACISM.
