Yesterday as we were delivering food and water to Bat Cave we found a @fema Urban
Search and rescue unit NY-TF1 after a long day airlifting people, etc..a team 18 people and 3 dogs. People like them are heroes all over NC….@DHSgov this what government does and we don’t realize it sometimes…👍#ChefsForNC

I’ve spent the last three days in Swannanoa, NC. The devastation is beyond anything I have ever seen and it’s not even close. Neighborhoods are completely wiped out. Residents shared heartbreaking stories of hearing people scream for help as their homes literally floated down the river. There were people in the trees who could not be rescued. It is truly sad and horrific.

I met a woman in her 70s who recently beat lung cancer. She lost everything in the flood and hasn’t even heard from her landlord to check if she’s alive. Now, she has to figure out how to restart her life. While talking with her, it became clear that her Faith will be her foundation.

Amid the devastation, the best of humanity is shining through. I’ve seen police and fire crews from Nebraska, Maryland, and other states working to the point of exhaustion to help. I even spotted a Border Patrol truck from Texas and multiple U.S. Coast Guard helicopters conducting food drops.

It’s always important to focus on the good and the heroic actions during tragic events. The heroes are here. It can’t be understated how amazing our nation’s first responders are: They are simply the best of us.

I also talked with several people who lost their homes and cars, but were spending their time delivering food on ATVs and helping those in need. It was very inspiring.

Many of you have asked what you can do to help. Right now, there’s not much more that can be done on the ground without getting in the way of the organized effort, but these people desperately need financial support. I’ve attached a few links below where you can donate directly to those who need it most if you are financially able to assist. If not, check with some local churches. Many have donation drives which are delivering food, clothes and supplies.
