@Jhoward_26@studiopillboy Elon musk = white (race); = Afrikaans (ethnicity) and I’m assuming a dual citizen (?) of South Africa and The United States (nationality). It’s really not that hard to grasp these concepts 🙏🏾 stop these unnecessary diaspora wars. It gets to a point really
@seaofknees_@SoloN0IR@acesutherland_ I do feel for Black 🇺🇸 ‘s & that’s why I get genuinely upset during diaspora wars. When you have been stripped of your ethnicity and forced to create your own identity in a nation that treats you like a second class citizen, I’d have a complex too. But, it gets to a point hey
@seaofknees_@SoloN0IR@acesutherland_ There is a fundamental misunderstanding of the difference between race, ethnicity and nationality. In a census, at my job, on my ID and on my passport it clearly indicates that I’m Black. Race = Black; Ethnicity = Tswana; Nationality = South African. But to each their own ig 🤷🏾♀️
@UjuAnya@thatso_r Ausi weh..as a fellow academic I’m going to hold your hand and tell you that it’s okay to be wrong. I’ve also been wrong in my own speciality. You inserted YOURSELF in a lovely conversation by Kev on polyglots. Then when you were called out, you used your credentials to deflect.
Code switching and being a polyglot are NOT the same thing. Yoh, and using your apparent credentials doesn’t excuse you being loud AND wrong. American exceptionalism is a hellava drug…la bora eintlik. Le rata dilo and la lapisa 🥴
Kev! What you’re describing is translanguaging (“codeswitching” from outside the speaker’s perspective). Black Americans also do this “weaving” beautifully in and out of African American language (AAL/AAVE) and North American English. You even did it right here on this tweet!😁😁
@unleashedknine@DontWor01930285@acesutherland_ Going overseas, I’m mistaken for being British because of my accent. But people see RACE before I even open my mouth. You are not the arbiters of identity.
@unleashedknine@DontWor01930285@acesutherland_ Sir, when we fill out census forms in my country, we fill in the form and disclose our RACE - I am Black. My nationality is South African and my ethnicity is Tswana (my tribe). You are a Black (race) AMERICAN (nationality). Overseas, I’m also Black.
The comments and qrts 😭 I’m sorry this is why we’ll always have diaspora wars. We don’t get to each other at all. What am I doing fighting with other people while I’m on holiday? How does that enrich my quality of life? And I’ve travelled quite a lot. If that makes me docile 🤷🏾♀️
so this American babe made a tiktok about how when black Americans go abroad people aren’t used to how confrontational they get towards the micro aggression and subtle racism Europeans are used to giving Africans and although she’s right, she and the comments were being condescending towards the Africans, so I’d like to correct that.
@maintishe I don’t like the insinuation this lady made that Africans are never tourists, we’re only passive ‘desperate’ migrants. Our passports are also thoroughly stamped for a vacays. It’s getting weird now…it’s giving American exceptionalism and micro aggressions towards Africans 🙃
@bugimane@maintishe This is not even true. Where’s your empirical evidence for these statements? 🤔I was absolutely LIVID about the BAFTAs controversy and I’m not from the US. It’s just “trust me bro” and vibes over here. I know people with citizenship in who STILL experience these aggressions
@_whltedress@poematios I think there’s a disingenuous argument being made here that centres American exceptionalism and that’s my main concern. Mark is an idiot and acted with gross negligence, but let us not have chats about how the world itself should be cognisant of American history. It’s reductive
@_whltedress@poematios But my other chat is that we assuming that despite where he grew up, that he retained that VITAL information. There are people in my own country who don’t even know the second flag that I posted even though in premise they should, and I consider my country to be pretty woke+
@poematios We weren’t taught US history in my country. It wasn’t a requirement. I learnt it all in my own because I LOVE history. Almost every war, dictatorship, colonialism, Neo-colonialism, imperialism etc etc. But that’s MY story and context. You cannot expect that to be default for all
@poematios I do not and would not expect the average Joe to know these 2 flags for example - even though they are prominant fixtures of racism, white supremacy and subject to hate speech. Tell me which country and in which context these are used? Honest, good faith answer without Google
@CityTshwane Don’t know it, not the owner of the rental. Please, I just asked everyone in the complex and they have no electricity either. Can you at least tell me who the Ward Councillor in that area is?
Honestly APT was an objectively bad song. It was a meme. If a Grammy darling like Bruno Mars can’t save your track, maybe do some introspection 🤷🏾♀️virility does not a good song make all the time.
