Incidentally, Chase Elliott withdrawing from Most Popular Driver voting means this will mark the first time either an Elliott or an Earnhardt HASN'T won Most Popular Driver in 36 years!
Darrell Waltrip was the last driver not from those two families to win the award back in 1990.
#NASCAR Most Popular Driver voting has officially opened, and Chase Elliott's name is missing from the ballot. This is intentional. Elliott has removed his name from consideration in honor of Kyle Busch, who could posthumously take home the award.
Chase Elliott has removed himself from voting for the Most Popular Driver award while Kyle Busch is eligible.
In 2001, Bill Elliott withdrew himself so Dale Earnhardt could win the Most Popular Driver award.
Now, Chase does the same 25 years later.
