BANDIT ECONOMY: SUGAR PRICES SOAR AGAINST RECORD SUGARCANE YIELDS
🌻Production up 35.2%. Cane deliveries up 36.2%. Highest half-year output on record. 437,852 tonnes between January and June.
🌻Yet retail sugar prices have risen for four straight months. Sh164.35 in April. Sh167.41 by July.
🌻Who’s capturing the gain? Not the consumer. Not the farmer.
🌻Kenya’s ex-factory sugar prices rose over 40% annually in both 2022 and 2023 — outpacing cane prices.
🌻That gap between what millers pay farmers and what they charge consumers keeps widening. World Bank and CAK both confirmed it in November.
🌻The State wrote off Sh117 billion in mill debt in 2023. Another Sh62 billion in 2020. Public money, private profit — and still no discipline in pricing.
🌻Now CS Kagwe has banned new import licences, betting leased mills alone will fix a market they haven’t fixed in a year of trying.
🌻Record harvests. Record prices. Same farmers getting shortchanged.
🌻That’s not agricultural reform. That’s extraction with a press release.
