The gospel presentation does not begin with:
“God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.”
It begins with:
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”
-Romans 1:18
You have sinned against a holy God. You stand condemned under His righteous judgment. You cannot save yourself, and apart from Christ, you will face His wrath for eternity.
That is the bad news.
And you need to hear the bad news before you can understand the good news.
The gospel is not that God has a better life waiting for you.
The gospel is that Christ came to save sinners from the wrath they rightly deserve.
He lived the righteous life you could never live.
He died the death you deserved to die.
He bore the wrath of God in the place of His people.
He rose from the grave.
And everyone who repents and believes in Him is justified, forgiven, and reconciled to God.
Don’t soften the bad news and you won’t have to dilute the good news.
The glory of grace shines brightest against the darkness of our sin.
Iowa QB Hank Brown talks about his tattoo of Acts 20:24 on his arm:
“My purpose & my aim in this life, is to tell others about the good news of God’s grace, which is the fact that God sent his son to die on the cross for our sins. We deserve to be on the cross & pay that penalty, but he was the substitute for us… Now he extends that gift of grace. All we have to do is accept it... I want everyone to know that gift. Ultimately, that’s my purpose & that’s why I have that [tattooed] on my bicep”
Not why you tagged me on this, Todd. Guilty conscience, perhaps? This is not my post, nor is it my picture.
But since you did tag me, I'll take this opportunity to tell you that you cannot believe Roman Catholic doctrine and be saved. Transubstantiation is an offense to Christ and His once for all, never to be repeated, sacrifice on the cross. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. If you add one milligram of works to grace, then grace is no longer grace. "But if it is by grace, it is no longer of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace" (Rom. 11:6).
Abandon your works, self righteousness, transubstantiation, Purgatory (which is also an abomination to the finished atoning work of Christ - it is a fictitious doctrine invented by the RCC to enrich itself), and praying to Mary and the thousands of other people you pray to.
Come to Christ empty handed trusting Him and Him alone. Come to Christ seeking a Savior not only from Hell, but from sin itself. If you will come to Him and Him alone, He will save you.
“In the year of our Lord 1506, I beheld it myself, being then but a lad of eleven years of age, when their bishop and clergy … had burned a young man there … only for having the Lord’s Prayer in English.” - John Bale’s preface, “Iohan Bale to the Christen Reader”
I thank God for the English Reformation and the brave men who sacrificed life and limb to allow me today to hold the Bible in the vernacular in an easily accessible and democratized form.
One quick qualification to Bale’s quote, his wording indicates the Lord’s Prayer in English was central to the condemnation, while also adding that the man rejected the practice of saying the prayer in Latin for the dead. So “burned simply for possessing the Lord’s Prayer in English” is a defensible shorthand, but it slightly compresses Bale’s fuller account.
@Phil_Johnson_ Praying for you and your family! Praying that you will not experience any pain and that if it’s the Lords will that you would be healed!!! Thank you for your ministry !
