@windtrack_QH Pfff. There is no possible explanation for the holocaust, other than monstrous evil. And the idea that the Chinese have a nuanced education about war and politics is laughable. F off creep.
@LeoTollstoy He demands that you take him absolutely seriously, he is deadly in earnest... And yet it's also a fond & wry & skeptical picture of Pierre. The deep resonance between these two notes is as good a summation of Tolstoy the novelist as any.
@AliceStainer@nguyenhdi I love the fingers hiding themselves with a jealous resolution. The humour is in Lockwood's idiocy. But you didn't say they weren't funny, you said they didn't have much sense of humour. Tolstoy certainly lost his as the fanaticism grew... Here's to two genuine geniuses anyhow
@nguyenhdi Me too, but come on! You don't see a sense of humour at play in this little sketch, the very first paragraph? And as for Tolstoy!... Anyway ✌️
@nguyenhdi Really? Lockwood's a wonderful caricature. Heathcliff & Cathy both have devastatingly sharp tongues, grim Northern bile. Slippy characters like Nelly are revealed with a fine irony. She was such a witty writer
@Islam435 The bombs were a terrible crime. But the US helped Japan to rebuild, it became a world powerhouse, democratic, free, and rich, and the two countries are great friends today. Can you name any similar case after an Islamic invasion in all of history?
@alon_mizrahi How's he doing that exactly? By failing to conquer his small neighbour, getting stuck in mud for years, displaying Russian incompetence for all the world to see, and sending countless Russians off to pointless deaths?
@rebeccabutlerm2 Very obvious no? Anything to weaken the EU & Nato furthers Russia's interests on its western flank. Weakening the UK itself is an added bonus.
@Cloud_Journal Tolstoy's the writer I love most, but I have such a vivid impression of him, from many biographies; whereas Jane Austen is a mystery. There's so much I'd love to ask & tell her. Also, possibly the only non-megalomaniac in the group
