@SuzieHasTwins This may well be the case. But that doesn't mean she hasn't made a big mistake. We don't see ourselves as others see us. Early on in her career she made a stand against Hollywood looks: now she's proved she's caved into them. She looks generic where once she looked particular.

But demonstrably (by many great critics & many other 'ordinary' readers), not 'shite'. In my experience, most people just require a little guidance towards understanding

@AmateurReader @nguyenhdi Agree with all this. The Man of Feeling's a strong precursor, combining the sentimental genre with the novel of manners, albeit from a male perspective. Fanny B was well-acquainted with the stage, so also agree she imbues her novels with that flavour but from a female perspective

@ibmmiller @nguyenhdi Well, Lizzy is in many ways her father's daughter 😊 I think it needs the irony, so I don't favour Mrs B, and to honour JA, I prefer it to be a female voice. But I'm open to other interpretations if they're intelligent, for sure.

@finesse_angles @KingBobIIV What is beauty, though? Is she a 'classic beauty'? Probably not. Is she an attractive woman making the best of herself while still looking 'real'? Yes. Is she beautiful to her husband? Thankfully, it seems, also yes. It's not an absolute standard.
