US fertility reached 1.57 last year, the lowest ever recorded, and the WSJ explanation is "uncertainty about finances, relationship stability, and the political climate"
my great grandma had eleven children during the second world war, in a country being bombed, in a house with no running water, on rations.
poor people have always had kids. the poorest people on earth right now still have kids and the financial excuse is a story we tell ourselves because it makes us feel good and the real one is unbearable
the real mechanism is that we got rich enough to redefine children as an expense instead of the point. somewhere in the last fifty years the cultural goal inverted and a child stopped being what life is for and became a line item competing with the lifestyle. once you frame it that way the math never works, because the math isnt supposed to work. that's the point
we are living in the richest moment in human history and we decided to use the surplus to buy ourselves out of the future. the most prosperous civilization that has ever existed is committing demographic suicide at the altar of personal optimization and comfort, and the official line is that we cant afford it
the birthrate is a lagging indicator of a civilization that forgot why it was alive
@DanielMiessler It'll be interesting to see how the value/cost balances out here. Cause Chris costs $100k+ all-in, and the AI providers expect to replace it for for more than $1,000 a year. And they will replace it - your point is spot on.
@AJA_Cortes@ComicDaveSmith Yes, and recognize that the tactics ICE is using are like the finger in the dam. Implement sizeable penalties for any employer hiring illegal immigrants, including for household work (like $100k per violation) and watch as willingness to employ evaporates and people move on.
@frankdegods I just had a conversation with an Automation provider along these exact lines - comparing cost of the solution against the book cost of an analyst that we've got a requisition out for. The Automation solution is cheaper now > your point about future escalation is important.
@FabianoSolana@FVSKapital@vexter Portugal has a lot to recommend it and a lot of painful elements as well. Have lived here last 3 years. Housing will be much more expensive than you think and public transport not awesome - so living close proximity to things matters.
@dcinvestor Muscle weighs more than fat. BF% a good indicator to see if it is shifting when weight stays same. My smart scale gives me weight and %. And honestly, we just want to look and feel better right? Who cares about a number if that’s happening.
