"They will never forget the stance we took 27 years ago."Turkish President @RTErdogan
responds directly to Israeli PM @netanyahu
Netanyahu had just declared at a Jerusalem ceremony (with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio) :
"This is our city, Mr. Erdogan.
It’s not your city. It’s our city. It will always be our city. It will not be divided again.
"Erdogan fired back, referencing his time as Istanbul Mayor in 1998 when Turkey refused to return the ancient Siloam Inscription (a Hebrew tablet from Hezekiah’s Tunnel proving early Jewish presence in Jerusalem) despite Israeli requests. The refusal was partly due to political sensitivities around Erdoğan’s Islamist base.Full relevant quote from Erdoğan:
"We will not allow the Al-Quds al-Sharif to be defiled by unworthy hands. I know the resentment of these Hitler imitators will perhaps never fade.
They may never forget the stance we took 27 years ago during our leadership in Istanbul Municipality. Let them continue their fits of anger.
As Muslims, we will not take a single step back from our rights over East Jerusalem."A sharp reminder of the long-running Turkey-Israel clash over Jerusalem’s status and Ottoman-era heritage.
