Liar…Hillary Clinton’s claim that Trump “once told Americans to inject bleach” is inaccurate and a common exaggeration of his April 23, 2020, remarks.1
What Trump actually said
During a White House COVID-19 briefing, after DHS official William Bryan described laboratory findings that bleach and isopropyl alcohol quickly kill the virus on surfaces, Trump mused aloud:
“And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds — it sounds interesting to me.”3
•He was posing a speculative research question to officials (not giving public medical advice).
•He never used the word “bleach” himself.
•Later in the same briefing, after a reporter asked whether bleach or isopropyl alcohol could be injected into people, Trump clarified: “It wouldn’t be through injections. We’re talking about through almost a cleaning, sterilization of an area…”3
•The next day he described the comment as sarcastic.
Fact-checker consensus
Major fact-checkers (Snopes, PolitiFact, and others) have repeatedly rated claims that Trump “told Americans to inject bleach” or instructed people to inject/ingest disinfectant as Mostly False or equivalent. He floated a poorly worded idea about studying internal use of disinfectant under medical supervision; he did not recommend or instruct the public to do it.1
His comments were widely criticized as reckless and confusing. Health officials, manufacturers of cleaning products (Lysol, Clorox), and doctors immediately warned the public not to inject or ingest disinfectants, and poison-control calls rose afterward.
