There are unprecedented events going on right now, bigger than hot or cold. In the winter of 23-24 we saw the most rapid warming of SST east of Australia in an el nino ever recorded. We have 3 record ( for time of year) "hot spots" in the Pacific ( 40n, the dateline, EPAC west of Mexico, and the ENSO), and last but not least, A stuck phase 6 MJO coming up in August, which is really nuts as the only phase 6 in August have occurred in much weaker El Niños. So that part of the atmospheric response is opposite of what we would expect looking at previous events. Now here is the real kicker. Phase 6 in August is quite cool. Models are anything but that in the plains and west. Meanwhile, last winter, phase 6, the kiss of death for cold in winter, was one of only 2 cases of cold coming in phase 6 ( the other was 1986, which is one of the years a phase 6 occurred in August with a coming El nino
