“You get mental toughness because things are hard and you have to embrace hard. I think that’s true in life. Tough times make hard people. Easy times make soft people,” Nick Saban
Winning is hard.
If you learn how to embrace how hard it is to win you become tough.
Toughness builds winners.

Tony Dungy said, "You will never lose emphasizing character over results. Be successful not just in what you do, but in who you are."
Your character is what you do.
It is the decisions you make.
It is the actions you take.
Good character isn't just a trait, it's a choice that leads to a life worth living.
It is doing the right thing and living your life with integrity, honesty, responsibility, courage, and self-discipline.
In great cultures: character trumps talent every time
Tony Dungy on How To Build Character:
1. It's How You Do Things
Be a person of integrity. Be honest and upfront with people. Treat people the right way and choose to do things the right way. Tony Dungy always treated people with honesty and integrity because that is how he wanted to be treated.
Takeaway: When you have integrity in how you do things, people know that you care about them and that they can trust you.
2. Don't Let Anyone Else Define You
Stay with what you believe in. When Tony Dungy was with the TB Bucs, the team was 1-8 but he knew they were headed in the right direction. People told him what he should do and ought to do, but you can't change and give up on things just because other people think you should.
Takeaway: You define the vision and what you want. Move forward with what you believe in.
3. Be A Problem Solver
Tony Dungy always talked about how there will always be challenges and problems, but there is no reason to sit there sorry yourself and make things worse. Don't blame yourself and don't blame others, think about how you can make things better. Ask the question "How can I make the situation better?"
Takeaway: By asking this question, you are focusing on what you can control and how you can take action.
4. Be True to Yourself
Tony Dungy waited over 3 years to get his first head coaching position. In his first interview, the Owner asked him if the team would be his number 1 priority. He said they would be very important and would be his family, but his own family would always be his first priority. He didn't get the job. When he interviewed for the Bucs job, he gave the same answer and the Bucs owner responded, "My family is the most important thing to me." Instead of lying and telling the previous owner what he wanted to hear to get the job, he stayed true to himself and found a position that fit him.
Takeaway: You have to be patient and true to what you want, otherwise it may not be a good fit.
5. Look Forward, Don't Look Back
Setbacks are normal. Detours are normal. There will always be challenges, but you have to define what you want and what is most important to you. When Tony Dungy made it to the NFL, he switched from a star QB to DB because his goal was to "play in the NFL". He didn't worry about what he did, but wanted to look forward to what he could do. He used the same mentality when he moved into coaching at 25 years old.
Takeaway: Learn from the past and use it as a guide, but don't live there. Control what you can control and look forward to the future.
6. Be Generous and Give to Others
Tony Dungy gave learning opportunities to assistant coaches such as Mike Tomlin, Leslie Frazier, and Herm Edwards. He did that because he was given opportunities by his head coaches, Dennis Green and Chuck Noll. Tony wanted to build great leaders for the future because he knew it isn't always just about yourself. Servant leadership means giving to others and giving to the team.
Takeaway: The smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest differences. When you support and guide others with kindness, you become a shining light for others.
"The secret to success is good leadership, and good leadership is all about making the lives of your team members or workers better." - Tony Dungy

Peyton Manning said, “The attitude with which we approach the situation can determine our success or failure.”
Your attitude is a choice.
A positive attitude is a choice for hope and belief.
A negative attitude is a choice for negativity and problems.
There will always be adversity, but it's your attitude and mindset that will determine how far you go.
Your attitude can turn a difficult situation into an opportunity.
You have to fight your brain because it will always have a bias towards negativity.
You need to rise above that negativity with a daily mindset and attitude of resilience, improvement, and gratitude.
6 Ways To Improve Your Attitude:
1. Transform Negative Self-Talk
Replace your negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Your words are powerful, especially the words that you speak to yourself. Studies by the Journal of Cognitive Enhancement highlight that positive self-talk can enhance confidence and reduce stress.
2. Create an Attitude of Gratitude
Spend time thinking about the positive aspects of your life. Feed yourself positivity, gratitude, and greatness instead of listening to complaining, negativity, and doubt. Research shows that practicing gratitude daily can lead to improved mood and overall well-being.
3. Stay Present - BE HERE NOW
All we have is the present moment. When you focus on the present, you reduce stress and anxiety because you aren’t worrying about the past or anxious about the future. Your attitude and mindset depends on your ability to be mindful of your environment.
4. Create Positive Moments and Connect
Connect with others and spend time with the people that you like. When you have an attitude of connection, you look for positivity and realize your effect on others. You also realize that others bring you support in those times of need.
5. Believe in Yourself and Your Future
Cultivate self-belief. Research has shown that having a positive self-view predicts better psychological well-being. When you believe in your future, you take ownership and responsibility for your choices and actions because you believe they will affect your future.
6. Prioritize What's Within Your Control
Take ownership and control what you can control. When you realize that you can control your mindset and attitude, you start to view external challenges for what they are, just challenges. Have a growth-mindset and believe that you can grow and improve.
"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms - to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s way."

Today was one to celebrate students, the way my colleague Joe Gawronski would want it. It was also a time to honor his legacy at Polaris Expeditionary Learning School, from which he retires as principal. Thank you for your vision & relentless advocacy. Adventure on, my friend!
Grateful for @JustinMichael51 and @briancrespo16 who took some time away from finals to speak to 4th graders at Mountain View Elementary about hard work, determination, and overcoming obstacles on the football field and in the classroom. @CSUFootball
The Rocky Mountain High School grad has been a staple of the program for over two decades and led the Lobos to 6 playoff appearances https://t.co/u0zRKmm9DF
DISCIPLINE IS A WAY OF LIFE
This entire clip from Coach Saban is pure gold. Discipline is everything. Every player should watch this clip understanding how they do drills in practice, how they warm up, or do anything is a mentality. It can't be turned on or off.
'Do 3 dollars work for a 2 dollar job'
"This thing about grit is real. It is about competing. It is about pushing yourself. It is about striving to be at your best. Nobody else controls this but you. You have an opportunity to create your own value. Let's get a little gritty."
First game day as a HC. I am so blessed by everyone who has helped me get to this point! Got a great group of young men who have bought into our culture, so excited to get rolling with them!
