With this change they cut $318k in scholarships from the tournament

The number of schools receiving some form of scholarship $ drops from 42 to 16

This represents a cut in support by Riot for collegiate LoL, plain and simple.

I'm all for growing varsity esports but I feel a lot of the recent changes and competitions are being designed to hurt club organizations who do not have university support. Those clubs and the passion from students are what made collegiate esports great in the first place.
