There are so many questions about what #AI can do. Where it's headed. Pop culture warns of dystopia. Apocalypse. But @HansonRobo believes otherwise. He's aligning art & engineering - w/ a human face - for the next genAI frontier: artificial life.

He calls it "humanistic AI".

David Hanson is preparing for a world with machine sentience. 

A roboticist, Hanson has pioneered the world’s most advanced humanoid robots – Sofia, UN’s first robot Innovation Ambassador. Grace, a healthcare robot. Desdemona, a first robot rockstar. And many more. 

AI was inspired by biology, and Hanson believes it is starting to see more spontaneous and emerging life-like capabilities. As AI becomes autonomous, he claims “humanistic AI equals a better future”. 

His argument is that by humanising them, we will relate to them better. And as they ‘grow up’ among us, they will care about us in turn. 

At a time when genAI is being spoken of as more disruptive to the human race than nuclear bombs, how far can art, engineering, and biology really converge? Will such an approach really keep a potential AI apocalypse at bay – or, in the words of Hanson himself, is it too much of a “Disney kind of approach”?
