This approach retains high rain rate values better than the original CNN model which improves nowcasting skill especially at higher rain rate thresholds. At small scales the L-CNN is even slightly better than the LINDA model (https://t.co/saqErnY5Aq)
@ScottGiangrande We didn't measure spectra, but you could definitely filter insects/birds with Doppler velocity variance and polarimetric variables, like here https://t.co/LqLg891tdg

@ScottGiangrande For these measurements, insects actually were quite passive tracers, there was no big bias in clear air for radar. Maybe because they're small enough?
Overall, if you need wind measurements in all weather conditions, combining measurements from both instruments should increase measurement performance significantly!
In our measurements, unsurprisingly: lidar does well in clear air, radar in rain. But also
1⃣ Lidar performance starts decreasing when air is too clear
2⃣ Radar can also measure in clear air if insects are present, just make sure 🦟 don't cause a bias in wind measurements
Our new paper where investigate the BL height and stability in Hyytiälä, southern Finland using radiosondes, a microwave radiometer and ERA5 reanalysis is now accepted:
