And 7 different parameters controlling the initial state, for example mean temperature and jet strength, can be varied from the model namelist. This new model configuration opens up endless research opportunities.

The initial state has been implemented into the global model OpenIFS. The resulting weather systems are realistic and include a realistic representation of upstream and downstream development. Even more, the initial states are exceptionally stable from a numerical point of view.

Absolutely horrible rain on snow event in Helsinki tonight. After 15 - 20 cm of snow two days ago it’s now above 3C and raining. Freezing rain slightly further north. These events would have been extremely rare in mid February without climate change

Had a great week at #ams2024. Was an honour to talk at the Dan Keyser symposium on Monday and the whole week was really interesting with so many great presentations and posters. Glad to have had a chance to check out Baltimore’s food scene too! @INAR_fin
