Another one of our favourite river restoration schemes was the River Bulbourne at Boxmoor in Hertfordshire, this one won several awards and completely transformed this previously straight 12m wide channel into to a diverse habitat.
@JohnDSeymour@berkhamsted800@stpeterberko On a nearby pillar is a medieval inscription of what might be a bird's head - possibly an eagle for St John whose chantry was there
@mandy1714@ChilternSociety@mandy1714 I won't ask where it is in detail, but I'd be very interested to know if it is in the Dudswell, Northchurch , central or south Berkhamsted sections?
Check out our new story map on Chiltern chalk streams, compiled by one of our volunteers, Susan Holmes. The story map gives a tour of the chalk streams found across the Chiltern Society’s area, including their ecological status & our nearby sites: https://t.co/xiw1eCUebH
The #RiverBulbourne greatest threat is over abstraction to keep the Grand Union Canal flowing.
Local volunteers & school groups work hard increasing a sense of place by daylighting sections & planting. A collaborative approach to river management could do wonders here!
#WWWeek
Surprisingly the Bulbourne is bearing up quite well in Central Berkhamsted, probably because the leaky lock gates 48 are repaired, reducing the need for abstraction for canal replenishment. It's dried out here in previous summers. Much drier upstream though. #chalkstreams
@RiversandPeople @Hillfortian The Bulbourne is actually flowing quite well in Berkhamsted, maybe partly because lock 48 gates have been repaired so there's less abstraction for replenishment. Upstream it's drier. And Wendy I think you are at Silbury Hill. Is the stream actually called the Winterbourne?
@hannahcharley@LincsCathedral@stpeterberko Thanks! Here is another complex one on top of Nunc Dimittis in Lombardic script, it's harder to read but notes are similar although some marks aren't music. There's a cross at the start too. It was in Lincoln diocese so I wonder if the music is connected?
@MedievalG@DrClaringtons@leicestercofe I've found at least 2 possible such crosses at original head height on the tower of St Peters Berkhamsted, consecrated 800 years ago. One may have figure on it? Other is daisywheel in circle. Would they all be in the same style?
