Fantastic in-depth article about the legendary "sewage sleuths" @watervole3 & @WindrushWasp today: https://t.co/OLzavC40Q8
And here they are telling their horrifying sewage tales in Rivercide, trying not to laugh as @GeorgeMonbiot crashes his canoe👇
The magnificent @frannyarmstrong has been hard at work editing the world's first live investigative documentary, #Rivercide, down to 60 crisp and compelling minutes. You can watch it any time for free at https://t.co/7voMKLhvNY Here's a glimpse, prangs, filth and all.
🚨NEW: A recent internal report from Natural Resources Wales reveals that 63% of farms they inspected were breaking environmental regulations.
Bad news for agricultural pollution in Wales.
Here’s the story, including a link to the full report:

If you saw Rivercide, you’ll remember Emily’s powerful interview with @GeorgeMonbiot about discovering her beloved River Llynfi polluted - the fish gasping on the surface.
Now @owensheers has rendered this horrifying experience into a poem…
Listen from 31 mins 20 secs to hear @owensheers read his powerful poem about the pollution of the River Llynfi.
It’s in the voice of Emily who was the first to report the disastrous fish kill.
“It’s always a dog walker, isn’t it, who finds a body…”

The masterful @owensheers has written a poem about the pollution of the Llynfi (a tributary of the Wye). It’s in the voice of Emily, who witnessed a major fish kill there in 2020 and featured on @rivercide_live. Listen to The Verb tonight, BBC R4, at 9pm. Recorded @hayfestival
📢BREAKING: River Wye gets its first bathing status!
Thanks to our challenge with the @GoodLawProject and @RiverActionUK, the @WelshGovernment has reversed their decision to deny bathing status to the Warren at Hay, a bathing place since at least the first OS map in 1888
Our citizen scientists monitor hundreds of sites throughout the Wye catchment.
For months, one site - Hollywell Dingle - has been topping our leaderboard of shame as the most polluted.
Has the @EnvAgency investigated the source of this pollution?
NO.

This was the extraordinary moment at our Restore the River event when Environment Agency Chair Alan Lovell was challenged by journalist @NicolaCutcher and a desperate audience on when the agency would enforce the law against polluters.
It was pretty wild chairing this event.
Everyone is clamouring for the @EnvAgency & @NatResWales to enforce the law to protect the river!
Here’s my write-up:
https://t.co/tmrN9Um3lb
🚨We’ve applied for a stretch of the River Wye, near Hay, to become a designated bathing water.
The Welsh Gov is consulting on the proposal.
Please respond by 19 February to make your views known.
Consultation details: https://t.co/v6eChWqWC0
📻Here’s the full interview with @NicolaCutcher, whose investigations reveal that the @EnvAgency admits to conducting ZERO inspections of non-permitted free-range egg farms along the Wye.
Such complacency is disgraceful and we look forward to seeing the EA in court next month!👊
DEFRA seems to be in denial about the Wye egg story in the Observer.
I have to call out this disingenuous statement from an anonymous @EnvAgency spokesperson:
‘permitted farms are subject to regular inspections’
There’s a catch. THREAD 🧵 1/8

Bravo @RiverActionUK & @watsonchas for bringing this out into the light!
Major problems with pollution coming from free-range egg farms.
The @EnvAgency & @NatResWales have woefully neglected this. Total regulatory failure.

🚨DISMAYING UPDATE
@NaturalEngland has informed us that they have merely issued a ‘warning’ in relation to this incident. No prosecution, no fine.
Laws are meaningless without enforcement.
The River Wye is officially ‘declining’: a story of regulatory failure.
I am absolutely thrilled to receive the National Angling Awards unsung hero of the year. Huge thanks to the team at @angling_times and @DomGarnett
This is greatly appreciated.

Me to Benjamin Zephaniah in 2021: could u write a poem about river pollution for mine & @GeorgeMonbiot's live doc @rivercide_live ?
BZ: I could perform River City Blues, which I wrote 25 years ago?

There is consensus here between supermarkets, farmers and environmental groups - we need ‘special measures’ for the Wye!
Why is govt asleep at the wheel? Where is the long-promised ‘Plan for the Wye’ from Secretary of State @theresecoffey ?
Inside national parks, nature is struggling.
How can it be restored?
