A 🧵 with many resources for applying to *PostDocs* in Astrophysics 👇👇👀 @AcademicChatter What resources do you recommend or did I forget? 😊😊♥️ #SharingIsCaring
Hi early career astronomers! @ExoCharbonneau's excellent presentation on "How to apply for Postdocs (in the USA)" as part of our @CenterForAstro workshops is now available for you on YouTube: https://t.co/XUZnLmzKQX, The slides are at https://t.co/chIwqk9UZJ
@CapricePhillips Now I'm an advisor myself but in Sweden, where this is straightforward: students are university employees and get the same number of vacation days as everyone else (and I make clear that they're expected to take them!).
@CapricePhillips I took 2-3 weeks over summer as a grad student (I think I just told my advisor I'll be home from *date* / I will be travelling after this conference for *time*).
@astrojthe3 Never got a dog but can confirm small child, particularly once they reach the age where they smile and wave enthusiastically to everyone, has a similar effect.
@bordergroves Second postdoc (in Sweden). Highly recommend moving to a country with a work-life culture that supports parents. (Full year parental leave followed by heavily subsidized daycare - easy mode compared to US colleagues!)
A new type of stellar explosion, Type Icn supernovae, is described in the latest issue of @Nature. Astronomers including scientists @Stockholm_Uni interpret the phenomenon as the outcome of a massive star that lost a large fraction of its mass before exploding. @theOKC
And, if you want to come join my group at @Stockholm_Uni you don't have to wait for the #ERC-funded positions: still a few days left to apply for already-advertised postdoc studying exotic supernovae from @ztfsurvey! DM me if you have any questions.

Thrilled to finally share that my #ERCStG project TransPIre was selected for funding! 🥳 Looking forward to spending the next few years using @ztfsurvey and @VRubinObs data to figure out the ultimate fates of the most massive stars 🌟

@CapricePhillips 2. Rule of thumb: ask, would I *want* to do this if it was happening next week? If no, then assume future you would feel the same way. Respect their time and say no 😅
@CapricePhillips Two perspectives that helped me in this regard: 1. when I turn something down (e.g. refereeing a paper), someone else who might need the experience more gets a chance. So I try to say no swiftly and with good suggestions for alternatives.
