@teachforever54@AlyssaMcWillia5@DDCalifornia Exactly. Universal screening for risk helps you see what you’re working with. Is it a few kids or many? Provides a general sense of the needs, for students, staff, and the system. There’s much to do afterwards, but it’s the start and provides the “why” for change and learning.
An example of what can happen when explicit, systematic instruction is paired with data-focused differentiation. The data shows a 3rd grader who started 2nd grade in 21-22 reading 2 WPM on DIBELS. Throughout the course of the year his accuracy improved, and his WPM increased.

📢 TELL YOUR STORY! Call in/tweet @KQEDForum to comment on universal screening for risk of dyslexia! Requiring screening is the 1st step in helping all access their right to read. Evidence & state guidance support it. The tools are readily available. It needs to be required!
🧵So, I thought I'd share how I came to be an advocate for explicit, systematic phonics instruction as part of comprehensive, evidence-based literacy instruction.
See, at first: I was not a fan. (1/x)

October is #DyslexiaAwarenessMonth month. Here is a well-done new video produced by the CA Dyslexia Initiative. Wouldn’t it be great if literacy leaders in every school district would watch!
