In the past 24 hours we saw the Coast Guard change its designation of the Swastika to be “potentially divisive ” instead of a “hate symbol” and then back again! This roller coaster has not only caused anguish for the millions of Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains living in the country, it has exposed yet again, the pervasive problem of failing to distinguish #Swastika from the #Hakenkreuz.

Designations carry meaning and power. Which is why it is the Hakenkreuz that needs to be classified as a “hate” or "potentially divisive,” NOT the Swastika.

Swastika is not Nazi. It means well-being and is antithetical to Nazi hate. Importantly, Hitler never used the word “Swastika” for his #Nazi symbol.

Even in Mein Kampf, Hitler used the word “Hakenkreuz,” a German word meaning “hooked cross.” While the two symbols might look similar, they are very different. Grouping Swastika with nooses and other such symbols is in itself hateful. It does a disservice to the victims of hate and furthers the agenda of hateful ideologies like Nazism.

In the past couple years, a Republican Governor @GovernorVA and a Democratic Governor @CAgovernor have both recognized the importance of this nuance and signed laws that make this distinction in Virginia and California. Education is crucial. The United States Coast Guard has a special obligation to stand for truth, and is in a unique position to disseminate correct information

Equating Swastika with Nazi hate has real consequences. Hindus have faced violence, Hindus’ property has been vandalized, Hindu children have been reprimanded at school, Hindu employees’ jobs have been threatened, Hindus have been barred from using resources, Hindu safety has been threatened — all because of the erroneous insistence that Swastika is Nazi.
