https://t.co/9gjcXeepMo This report by the All Party Parlimentary Group on Emergency Care went under the radar yesterday (the media was distracted) but contains some really important information. A rambling thread 1/n
A short seven years (!) after I started writing the code, it’s great to see this paper published.
We use high-frequency NHS to data show that short-staffed, less experienced nursing teams deliver worse outcomes – with the largest mortality impacts for patients with sepsis.
🚨New @tilda_tcd study. How prevalent are modifiable dementia risk factors in Ireland 🧠 🇮🇪? 12-year observational study in community-dwelling older adults. Massive opportunity to optimise brain health for many!! @drnire@RoseAnnekenny1@alzheimersocirl https://t.co/f24E6fVPae

🧠 Great to see @IrishTimes coverage of new TILDA research showing that tackling treatable risks like hearing loss, inactivity & high cholesterol could prevent thousands of cases of dementia in Ireland. https://t.co/RTovqXjPZc

great from @docib https://t.co/hHZjQfd4pt - do join the @rcgp overdiagnosis group. What is a 'normal' level of error, an 'acceptable' and 'optimal' level of harm - both in terms over and under overdiagnosis and treatment: problem is that counting is often in only one direction

Tax breaks were given to developers of private nursing homes by successive governments- the estimated cost of the State subsidy was €10 billion. Investors were attracted by tax breaks, rather than an interest or understanding of older people and their care #RTEInvestigates
The Professors vs Final Med Students Annual Soccer Match kicked off this afternoon in glorious sunshine - Herbert Park. We'll get back with the final winning team soon #ThisIsTrinityMed@tcddublin

Our new @Age_and_Ageing paper shows how ABPM biomarkers predict future falls in older people:
- x4 increase in falls if dips in sBP below 100
- 3% falls reduction for every 1 mmHg increase in lowest sBP value
- Higher morning surge --> more falls

MISA was established through philanthropic funds to be a national exemplar and test bed for models of clinical care delivery and seamless acute/community services for older persons. The 4 pillars - clinical research education creativity - are the first working model for An Academic Health Sciences Campus in Ireland. AP and Chuck Feeney knew that ageism is common in hospital systems hence they created a dedicated facility to safegaurd quality care for older patients. This legacy must be protected and nurtured.
We're delighted to welcome the Irish SpRs in Geriatric Medicine for a day of education & training in clinical updates & new service models for which #MISA is recognised 🏥 #education
