1/ Excited to report we have a new paper out @Nature today! The bottom line: training data for LLMs does not just fall from the sky - it is created in the context of existing social political institutions - and that has consequences for LLM output.

@YamilRVelez Milt's office description was on point! The phrenology bust was always there, and at some point he also added a bunch of 1940s computers as "decoration" lol
"The highest form of respect for a theory is not empty reverence, but a fair test. And sometimes, the fairest test requires building the design it deserves."
Strongly recommend giving it a read!
We've been working on these designs since 2022. The project makes the case for a more personalized approach to social science. I wrote a short reflection on Stony Brook, motivated reasoning, and how I came to the project.

1/ If you work with #AmericasBarometer data in R, you’ve probably rebuilt the same workflow over & over: labels, weights, rescaling, plots, exports.
We built the lapop R package to make these workflows faster, cleaner, & reproducible.
Now on CRAN: install.packages("lapop") 🧵
New preprint out today (https://t.co/UChyCZTcxv). We tested whether AI agents are actually infiltrating online surveys.
Spoiler alert: they aren't

@YamilRVelez@akoustov@andrew_j_gordon@seanjwestwood Exactly, the ad algo will quickly learn that those accounts reliably click survey links and will feed them even more opportunities. They will look like high-value respondents in a low-CTR/low-engagement environment
@YamilRVelez@akoustov@andrew_j_gordon@seanjwestwood I also can believe agents aren’t prevalent on professional survey platforms. MTurk has long been the main concern, but I wonder if this pattern also holds in samples recruited via social media ads, rather than only panel-based samples
