Privately, in his diaries, Doctor Fauci admitted he no longer believed the wet market was the origin of covid. A week later, he convenes a call with 12 scientists, and only two of them think it's definitely animal spillover.
Publicly, he comes out against lab leak and presses the Proximal Origins paper to find in favor of animal spillover. Seems bad.
2/9 Jan. 26, 2020. Fauci writes in his diary: "Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier."
That is January of 2020. The wet market was already off the table in his own private notes.
So many wrong answers in the replies. I don’t mean that Washington, Lincoln, or even Reagan don’t deserve defending. They do. But they’re not really under attack in a way that requires some lengthy and detailed response. I don’t think the effort to rehabilitate Nixon is worth a lot of effort but I get that, because bott the haters and defenders are often wrong in interesting ways. But their obvious answer is Calvin Coolidge. We’re Lincoln and Washington more important and vital presidents? Of course. But they don’t need much help. Meanwhile Coolidge does.
The Odyssey reviews are in! Does @christianbrits finally convince @robbysoave that he's wrong about a movie? Listen to find out. https://t.co/6Qv6aUo6ah
Most important midterm race for setting up the 2028 primary is clearly Michigan.
If El-Sayed wins nom and general, progressives proved they can win a big swing state; El-Sayed instantly becomes one of the most prominent Dem senators, and advocate for AOC ‘28.
If El-Sayed wins nom and loses to Rogers, the center-left can (and will) blame the left for losing a MI Senate seat that’s been blue since the 90s; El-Sayed becomes a cautionary tale of voting for a charismatic left-winger and handing the W to Republicans.
If Stevens wins nom and general, not much changes, but the left doesn’t have a swing state story to tell.
If Stevens wins nom and loses to Rogers, the left can say: See? See? You idiots pulled out the stops for your candidate and she blew it. Hand over the keys.
Robby slams DSA candidates for aligning with controversial left-wing figures, but Lindsey points to Tucker Carlson platforming right-wing figures like Nick Fuentes.
@robbysoave: “Kyle Kulinski is friends with, and Hasan Piker is friends with, people who are running for office and going to win.”
@IamLindseyG: “Nick Fuentes was just on Tucker Carlson’s podcast, who said he may run.”
ROBBY: “Tucker Carlson is out! He’s not part of the Republican coalition anymore.”
LINDSEY: “Tucker Carlson is still embraced by a lot of people. He’s JD Vance’s really, really, really good friend.”
ROBBY: “You’re alighting over a lot of differences and distinctions, and people fighting amongst each other, or fighting with Nick Fuentes, or fighting with Tucker Carlson.”
“They’re not fighting with Kyle Kulinski there. No one’s gonna speak up on that thing and say ‘excuse me, you just evinced support for terrorism.’”
@janecoaston What’s your point? Speaking only for myself, reducing the role of the gods so dramatically is a very weird choice that doesn’t entirely work.
Oh no, I agreed with this! I'll save my broader Odyssey take for Freed Up tomorrow, but yeah... I was underwhelmed, unfortunately. Not because it was too woke or miscast or whatever, all of that was fine. I guess I just wanted something a bit more inspired or original than the same "great man tortured by regret" theme we have come to expect from Christopher Nolan.
Emily Wilson after watching the Odyssey:
‘The film presents an Odysseus who feels very bad about things that he's done in war, and is struggling to process them in a very modern, psychiatrised way – and needs drugs to do so! He seems to feel bad about being a warrior, and we never actually see him get to do much warrioring ... Nolan makes the protagonist a likeable, all-American hero; Homer's Odysseus wants glory, and he wants to get spoils from the sack of a city! I kept looking in vain for a sense that this was a film about glory. This is a film that has an interest in shame, but I don't think it has any interest in glory.’
Apparently Jamelle Bouie is completely unaware of the DSA's explicit rejection of its anti-communist principles over the last decade https://t.co/Yvi2odh8xk
Hasan Piker and the DSA praise socialism, excuse authoritarianism, and want to collectivize American life. These aren’t new ideas. They’re failed ones. https://t.co/zcAT02B2dG
Andy Ngo goes in-depth with @robbysoave on a new State Department report which alleges that Cuba has used social media to spread far-left ideologies in the U.S.
@MrandyNgo: “These influencers, what they do is they influence and carry out the messaging of the propaganda, which is really important. It’s about normalizing communism.”
“We can look at some of the things that some of their influencers have said publicly on the record, like Hasan Piker calling for violence and calling for the streets to run red with the blood of enemies of the working people.”
“That type of stuff is all to advance the cause of the Cuban regime… communism and Marxism and leftist radical ideology more broadly.”
@Timcast Well, I mean, back then the platforms were more much more heavy-handed about moderation and their misinformation rules. We won that battle and they backed off it, so in a sense we are victims of our own success here.
Bingo. This is why I say support for socialism is an elite phenomenon. It's disproportionately people who bought the lie that a fancy credential is a good investment and now want other people to pay for it.
Income and education are usually positively correlated. But sometimes the relationship breaks down. What's the most Democratic voting group in America? People with post-graduate degrees but lower-to-middle incomes.
Terrific write-up in @NRO of the current state of the war in Ukraine. I was also on this trip with @AStuttaford and others, and was similarly struck by a detail he includes here.
