Last week, the gov. released the latest data pertaining to teacher numbers. It showed that there are 1,900 fewer teachers today than 2024.
Despite this, Labour have claimed that they're on track to achieve their manifesto pledge.
Here's why that claim is misleading:
(1/10)🧵⬇️
@LauraTrottMP This was always going to be the consequence of Blair’s reckless plan to turn universities from centres of learning excellence into Labour voter factories.
@AshleyDalton_MP This is untrue. The latest figures show a decline in teacher numbers. Spiteful Bridget has simply moved the goalposts to manipulate the numbers in her favour. All she cares about is taxing disabled kids and punishing excellence… oh and toast.
@tes@brownejacobson Maybe @bphillipsonMP could spend some time time trying to actually improve education rather than taxing disabled kids and posing with chocolate bars to try to make school environments more dangerous for the children she despises?
@peterkyle Business is operating despite this government, not because of it. Inexperience & inability right across your party has led to catastrophic decisions at every turn. Don’t involve yourselves in things you don’t understand - get out of the way & let the country thrive.
@educationgovuk Did you see the lies?
The government is now using the Civil Service to parrot misinformation when it decides to move the goalposts on the pledges it made.
Disgraceful to see public bodies abused in this way.
Watch @JeremyClarkson on #clarksonsfarm for a real life example of people fighting to survive against the worst examples of a Socialist government staffed entirely by people who have never made anything, never created anything and never contributed anything.
@legocrankykong@ramonagusta@barbourtwat Why should education in private schools be taxed if education in universities and nurseries is not? Children’s clothing is not taxed, tickets to the opera are not… a large number of things which are a benefit to society are not taxed. Taxing education and disabilities is amoral.
@KevinASchofield@RosieDuffield1 Massive amounts of taxpayers’ money blown to satisfy the personal ambition of one man wanting to climb over the backs of Makerfield constituents so he can ignore them as soon as he gets the job he wants.
@LauraTrottMP How many warnings did Blair ignore when he set in motion the ludicrous policies that brought about this damage to our Higher Education system.
@JeremyVineOn5@thejamesmax@FamilyLawGuruUK Well said James. This government’s willingness to use peoples’ predisposed views of posh boys from Eton to persuade them to support a tax on disabled kids and minorities tells you everything you need to know about their broken moral compass.
.@GLJourno rightly points out in @thetimes that larger independent schools have closed since VAT took effect. Unfortunately, @educationgovuk continue to struggle understand their own department--or the effects of their own policy.
They write:
"More private schools opened than closed in 2025, and our data shows that private school pupil numbers remain firmly within historical patterns seen for over the last 20 years."
Here's the problem: They are including "independent special schools" which are NOT AFFECTED by their Education Tax. Independent special schools are typically very small schools (fewer than 50 students) set up to educate children with highly specialised education needs that can't be supported in mainstream state schools. These schools are not affected by VAT by policy design, because local authorities can reclaim that tax.
Mainstream independent schools ARE affected by this tax.
The table below, from @educationgovuk data, shows what actually happened in 2025.
Given the @educationgovuk's lack of understanding of their own policy, we call for an urgent review--and repeal--of this tax.

@john4brexit That’s why they’re using per capita numbers - Italy’s population has declined over that period, France’s has grown 3% and the UK 6% so it suppresses the relative economic growth of the UK through an unrelated factor.
@SamJRushworth You had years during which you could have had a mature conversation. Instead you came into power & took decisions which have destroyed the job hopes of tens of thousands of young people. If you’re incapable of governing responsibly, you should step aside for a party that is.
@afneil@Politrics1 As with most of the issues they’re ’tackling head on’ like energy costs and the cost of living, the measures introduced by the government are excacerbating the problem. They’re making it significantly more difficult to employ younger workers.
@IGMansfield And also an exercise in pure political spin. By villainising kids in Eton and Harrow as representative of the whole private school sector, they persuaded otherwise decent people to support a policy which hammers disabled children and costs the taxpayer money.
