It is high time US re-evaluates its reliance on sanctions as the go to policy in dealing every situation it does not like. It has largely not changed any of the actions it has been intended for and in fact worsened them, and instead inflicted poverty and misery on innocent people.
APPLEBAUM: What Russians do is they put out not one lie, but million lies, or not one explanation, but one after another.
It's a propaganda technique. They just flood people with massive, contradictory stories, and sooner or later, people won't pay attention to anything at all.
And there's so much information all the time that people eventually just tune out, and they say, "I don't know what's true, I don't know what's not true, I don't believe anything, I'm not going to engage in this issue, I'm not going to get angry about it, I just don't want to know anything at all."
Not since the collapse of communism, more than three decades ago, has Albania been shaken by such collective fury, sparked by a planned resort backed by Trump's son-in-law with anger then turned on the government. https://t.co/yXnCTUb1xa
This is an utterly insane story: 25,000 documents reviewed by WaPo indicate that throughout Tulsi's career, her political moves were controlled by her guru, cult leader Chris Butler.
This woman was leading the world's largest intelligence apparatus.

@robertazunini

So @jonswaine@washingtonpost has seen hundreds of documents containing evidence that Tulsi Gabbard, Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence, was directed throughout her career by the leader of the cult she grew up in

The EU remains too weak and uncertain on Turkey. Democracy, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms are under attack. Silence is not neutrality. It is complicity. #Turkey#Democracy#RuleOfLaw#EU
Applebaum: Putin has presented a fake image of Russia to the world. He talks about leading a traditional society
In reality, divorce is very high, abortion is common, very few Russians go to church and less than 5% have ever read a Bible. It's not a traditional culture at all 1/

This is one of the most important churches in Ukraine. The Russians would not strike it by accident. Putin is deliberately attacking Christianity, history, culture
I told @nytimes that Iran is inclined to make a deal with US because it faces more dire economic conditions but at the same time, US and Israel failed in their strategic objectives in two consecutive wars so Iranians want the US to come to the table with the realization that they’re not defeated, and the military conquest of Iran is not in the cards. And Iran wants to use the framework under discussion to test whether Trump will really implement an accord. They want to see whether he actually will lift the blockade. They want to see whether he can maintain cease-fire in Lebanon, and they want see whether he will deliver some of their money. If all that happens, they could be willing to negotiate something bigger. https://t.co/VrFHrxPWyV
Not a day goes by without a new outrage exposing the misery people are forced to endure so that one man can stay in power indefinitely.
On Tuesday, a former executive at a municipality-owned company in Istanbul told a court that she was strip-searched in police custody, ordered to expose her genitals and bend over, and threatened with losing custody of her children after she asked to consult her lawyer during a corruption investigation targeting officials linked to Istanbul’s opposition-run municipality.
Applebaum: What binds Russia, China, Iran and North Korea is not religion or ideology.
China is communist, Russia nationalist, Iran theocratic. What binds them is fear of liberal language: rights, rule of law, separation of powers and independent courts. 1/
Kurds did not receive weapons, President Trump is being lied to by Barrack and Erdogan—everybody in his administration knows it but nobody is willing to say it.
