🔸 July 23 - The Holy Prophet Ezekiel 🔸

Today, we commemorate the Holy Prophet Ezekiel, a priest from the tribe of Levi who lived in the 6th century before Christ. At the age of 25, Ezekiel was taken captive to Babylon with King Jeconiah and many Israelites during the first major deportation following King Nebuchadnezzar’s attack on Jerusalem in 597 BC. While in exile, Ezekiel was granted a divine vision concerning the future of Israel and all mankind.

He saw a radiant cloud and four living creatures - one with the face of a man, one like a lion, one like an ox, and one like an eagle, each with four wings (Ez. 1:6,10). Above them, he beheld the likeness of a Man upon a sapphire throne (Ez. 1:26) According to the Holy Fathers, the One upon the throne foreshadows the Incarnation of the Son of God. The four living creatures represent the four Evangelists: the man (Matthew), the lion (Mark), the ox (Luke), and the eagle (John).

Overcome with fear, Ezekiel fell on his face, but the voice of the Lord commanded him to arise. The Lord then sent him to proclaim His word to the house of Israel. Thus began Ezekiel’s prophetic ministry. His prophecies revealed God’s mercy and His call to repentance, while warning Israel of the trials to come because of their unfaithfulness. He also foretold their return from exile, the restoration of the Temple, and the closed eastern gate, understood by the Church as a prophecy of the Ever-Virginity of the Theotokos.

In Ezekiel 37:1-14, the prophet beheld a valley full of dry bones. At God’s command, he prophesied over them, and they were clothed with flesh and raised to life. This vision signifies the spiritual restoration of Israel and, in the Orthodox Church, also prefigures the general resurrection of the dead. Ezekiel was granted the gift of wonderworking. Like Moses, he parted the river Chebar, and the Israelites crossed in safety.

During a famine, he prayed and food was miraculously multiplied. The Holy Prophet was martyred for condemning idolatry, being bound to wild horses and torn apart around 570 BC. He is honoured as a steadfast witness to the truth, obedience, and the living power of God’s word.
