I keep seeing people claim these two plays are “the exact same thing.”

No. They’re not.

Let’s start with what IS the same: both were dangerous, unnecessary fouls. Both were correctly assessed Flagrant 2s. Both players were correctly ejected.

But that doesn’t make the plays identical.
When Sophie Cunningham fouled Jacy Sheldon, Sheldon was on her feet, dribbling toward the basket. Sophie delivered a hard, intentional foul and was rightfully tossed.

When DiJonai Carrington fouled Sophie, Sophie was airborne. Carrington took a forceful swing across the head/neck area of a player who had already left the floor.

Anyone who has played basketball understands why contact like that is especially dangerous: an airborne player has virtually no ability to protect herself or control how she lands.

And then there’s the context.

Sophie’s foul didn’t happen in a vacuum. Earlier in that game, Sheldon poked Caitlin Clark in the eye, Clark shoved her away, and Marina Mabrey came in and knocked Clark to the floor.

Sophie’s foul later in the game looked pretty clearly like a teammate sending a message: you’re not going to keep taking shots at our star without somebody responding.

Does that make Sophie’s foul legal? No.

Does it mean she shouldn’t have been ejected? No.

But it explains why it happened.

With Carrington’s foul on Sophie, there was no comparable sequence leading up to it. Nothing that makes you say, “That was absolutely a flagrant foul, but I understand why she felt the need to send that message.”

You can believe both players deserved to be ejected while also recognizing that the circumstances, degree of danger, and context of the two plays were different.

Same classification. Same punishment. Not the same play.
