My testimony on Dyslexia before the United States Senate… the power of God’s grace cannot be underestimated.. #ZatimaOnBETPlus fans. Dyslexia is real. I struggle to get to where I am, but I got there you can do.
Yesterday was in a conference session about the science of reading -- why it works, how it works, what's important to know, how we press forward so more kids can read.
And a woman behind me spoke up, I'm sure with good and honest intentions, that "In pre schools we can't do this, we have to teach them to love reading first."
I want people to stop and think about what it's like for a child to spend 4 or 5 years, their entire schooling experience, being told they HAVE TO READ, they HAVE TO LOVE IT, that's it's the KEY TO FREEDOM... but never actually being taught in the thorough, direct, systematic way that is most likely to lead to being able to read on grade level.
What do you think happens to that child and their relationship with school and teachers? I see struggling fourth grader readers every day at work. They are frustrated. They feel ashamed. They act out. They will look you right in the eye and say "I hate reading." And they find like minded friends and band together. What do you think that looks like in 8th grade if they don't get help?
Warning: To all of you who are survivors who have been silenced or haven’t found a way to tell, or aren’t in a safe space to tell - be gracious to yourself as you watch and as you recover from the wounds re-opening.
This is for you and this is also your voice ❤️🙏🏻
📚 Literacy is a Civil Right 📚
The NAACP is taking a bold stand by declaring literacy a civil right, and they’re pushing for an "evidence-based professional education system". But this effort will take all of us—schools, educators, policymakers, and communities—working together to ensure every child has access to the literacy education they deserve. There is ONE aim: ERADICATING ILLITERACY 🔥

Every once in a while I like to share this video I made years ago when I myself was just starting to learn about cognitive load theory. This learning was transformative for me too.

Do you even know how much good theology could be done by women for the benefit of Christ's church if we just had to spend less time becoming experts on gender just to defend our ability to learn theology in the first place??
Time in text should not be replaced by read alouds.
BOTH are needed when intermediate grade students have word recognition skills that are significantly below grade level.
I may be late to the game... but have you checked out https://t.co/dTJzmJ4rRd? They have vocabulary photo cards and thought how useful for vocabulary instruction, especially for those learning English. Check out these picture cards: https://t.co/90MBTDKwUG
