I’m based in Shenzhen and spend most of my time inside the city’s business, hardware and manufacturing ecosystems.
Through Here in Shenzhen, I document what is happening on the ground, help founders and teams explore the right parts of the ecosystem, and support practical projects when there is something worth moving forward.
That can mean markets, factories, companies, supply chains, product development, manufacturing, or simply understanding how Shenzhen actually works before making a decision.
I’ll be sharing more of that here: what I see, who I meet, what I learn, and what actually happens when people try to build things in Shenzhen.

Was checking out cars with a friend at a mall in Shenzhen. Xiaomi, Tesla, Huawei, NIO, Li Auto, you name it.
Astra edited this clip with one simple prompt and only 1% usage on 5x Pro, Astra Medium.
Pretty impressed.
A lot of people assume China is far more conservative than it really is.
They’re shocked when they see a sex toy fair here in Shenzhen.
Honestly, China is just America on the other side of the Pacific, lol.
OpenAI is planning to pause Pro subs because they can't manage demand for Astra, so why are they giving bunch of resets and even Tibo has previously said "Do not worry, we have compute"?
Most founders ask the wrong first question when they plan a trip to Shenzhen.
It usually goes:
“Hey Robin, can you introduce me to a factory?”
But visiting factories probably won’t solve your hardware product problem.
In fact, unless you’re just curious about manufacturing, a factory is often one of the last things you need to worry about on your first trip.
My first question is always:
What stage is the product actually in?
Concept, prototype, or pre-production?
Because the answer changes everything.
The right introduction only matters after the right path is clear.
Honestly pretty disappointed by the level of innovation I saw at the sex toy fair.
More Physical AI founders should look at this market.
There’s way more room for real product innovation here than people probably realize.
