We’re no strangers to unusual sights, but even for us, this was shocking.

On Tuesday evening, our Ops Room received reports of a young elephant trapped along the Mzima Springs Pipeline. Our nearest SWT/KWS Anti-Poaching Team rushed to the scene, joining forces with the KWS Manyani Team.

What they found was heartbreaking: the calf was wedged headfirst inside a narrow breather outlet – an inescapable trap. His herd stood nearby, distressed but helpless.

As darkness fell, the rescue became a race against time. Inch by inch, the teams worked to free him and after more than an hour of painstaking effort, the calf was finally pulled free at 20:00 hrs.

Numb and disorientated after hanging upside down for so long, he slowly regained his strength. The teams stayed with him until he was back on his feet and able to reunite with his waiting family.

A difficult rescue with the best possible ending: one wild life saved, and an elephant family kept together.

💔 Today has been one of the hardest days we've faced in a long time.

Since early this morning, my heart has been aching for one of our own.

Our beloved team member, Gulam Nabi, was on his way to the sanctuary at around 6:30 a.m. when he was involved in a devastating road accident.

Many of you already know him, even if you don't know his name.

If you've ever visited our shelter, you've almost certainly met him in the cat sanctuary. If you've watched our videos over the years, you've seen him quietly caring for our cats in the background.

He isn't just a member of our staff.

He is family.

We always joked that he was the cats' "mother" because nobody looked after them with more love than he did. He never saw them as work. He loved every one of them with all his heart.

He would arrive before his shift started, stay long after it ended, and even on Eid he hardly ever took a day off. He simply couldn't bear the thought of our cats waiting for him.

Right now, our whole team is heartbroken.

Since this morning, everyone has been doing everything they possibly can for him. One of our team members travelled with him in the ambulance and has remained at the hospital ever since, arranging every test, every scan, every formality and every treatment. Others are ready to donate blood if needed. We are standing beside him exactly as he has stood beside our animals for so many years.

His condition is extremely critical.

The doctors have confirmed bleeding on his brain, and he is due to undergo emergency brain surgery shortly.

Please... I am asking you from the bottom of my heart.

Please keep Gulam Nabi in your prayers tonight.

He comes from a very poor family, and we will do everything we can to support his treatment, but we cannot do it alone. If you are able to help in any way, we would be deeply grateful.

Today, it isn't only our cats waiting for him.

It is all of us.

This happened last Monday afternoon at Hawthorn County Animal Services in North Carolina.
The man is Phil. He's 57 years old. He works in property management and had been thinking about getting a dog for over a year. His apartment lease changed recently to allow pets. He told himself he was just going to look - get a sense of what the process was like. Not commit to anything. A shelter volunteer named Amber walked him through the kennels. At the end of the row, she introduced him to a sandy-colored mixed-breed named Otto. Four years old. He'd been at Hawthorn for seven months. He'd been adopted once before — returned after two weeks with the note: "Too attached. Follows constantly. Can't be left alone." Amber set Phil up in a small visiting room with Otto. Phil sat on the bench.
Otto pressed against his leg immediately. They sat together for about twenty minutes — Phil scrolling his phone, Otto staying close without demanding anything. When Phil's parking meter app sent him a reminder alert, he stood up. Otto didn't bark. Didn't jump. He simply stepped forward, placed both front paws around Phil's calf, and held on. Phil took a step toward the door. Otto's paws tightened. He pressed his forehead into Phil's knee. His body was trembling faintly. His tail was low. He made no sound at all. Phil stopped moving. The CCTV footage shows Phil standing completely still in the middle of the room for nearly a full minute - just looking down at this dog holding onto his leg in total silence. Amber was in the hallway. She said the silence in that room was the loudest thing she'd heard all week. Phil sat back down on the floor. Otto climbed directly into his lap.
Stopped trembling. Phil sat there for another fifteen minutes. Then walked to the front desk. He told Amber on his way out, adoption paperwork in hand: "I came here to look. I wasn't going to do anything today. But he didn't make any noise. He didn't demand anything. He just held on. How do you walk away from that?" Otto went home with Phil that evening. Phil sent a photo three days later. Otto was noted that Otto's "attachment issues" were removed from his file at adoption. Phil's comment in the closing paperwork read: "Not an issue. It's a feature." Sometimes the quietest plea is the one that stays with you longest.
