With Abdul, Obama's "high moral ground" is when Arab-Americans worry about "people who might be related to them" outside of America. It does not matter where the U.S. national interest stands here.

Then they ask Jews to stand alone on Obama's "high moral ground" and behave as borderless globalists, disregarding their kin in Israel.

My neighbor shamed Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD) for voting against U.S. aid to Israel even though Raskin has relatives under fire in Israel. Raskin responded, per my neighbor, that he was scared of being primaried by the cult (he didn't say cult-- my word).

This is where yours truly, an American with a proud Arab heritage, stands: Paying Israel serves U.S. national interests much more than withholding funds or undermining the alliance. My own family house in Lebanon suffered during Israel's response to Hezbollah's war. But that does not factor into my calculus. America first, then trying to pull "our relatives" overseas to stand where it becomes mutual benefit -- for them and for the U.S. Paying Jordan, too, is worth every cent.

And no, cutting the aid to Israel will not bring down the prices of eggs and bananas.

As Israelis go to the polls, here's what's on my mind:

➡️ Democracy! Free elections are not to be taken for granted in the Middle East. Consider the contrast: A Palestinian born when Mahmoud Abbas was elected president in 2005 is now 21 years old and has never had the opportunity to vote because Abbas refuses to hold elections.

➡️ Israelis are not voting for international approval. The outcome will have consequences for Israel's standing in the world, but Israelis are primarily concerned with their security and vision for the country's future.

➡️ There is more security consensus than outsiders might realize. The leading contenders for prime minister broadly agree on the threats posed by Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. A new prime minister won't inherit a new Middle East.

➡️ The deeper divisions concern the character of the country. There are fundamental questions about the social contract, the rule of law, and accountability for the failures of October 7. At the heart of these debates is how Israel addresses violence in Arab communities and violence in the West Bank, and how it decides who serves in the military and who bears the burden of defending the country.

Above all, this election is about security. But it's also about the kind of country Israelis want to live in, the responsibilities they owe one another, and how they navigate an extraordinarily difficult future.

In 1977, Iranian Islamists and leftists joined forces in Paris to bring down the Shah.

Two of my uncles took opposite roads for the same revolution. One was a radical Maoist who went to China to learn to handle a weapon so he could bring down the monarchy. The other went to Paris to study, where he became a radical Khomeinist.

Fresh out of the Maoist camps, my communist uncle moved to Paris in 1978 to join his brother.

Once the clerics had seized total power, they put him and his comrades against the wall of a white-tiled room and executed them. In the following years, thousands of communists who had believed they were using the Khomeinists for their agenda learned how naive they were. The regime sent my family photographs of my uncle’s bullet-riddled body. The family had to pay so-called bullet money before they were allowed to bury him. I found the pictures years later, snooping through my mother’s things.

My zealous uncle went to war, leading one of the units the regime sent into Saddam Hussein’s minefields. The Islamic Republic sent young boys ahead of them as human mine-clearers, plastic keys to paradise dangling from their necks. My uncle stepped on a mine and came home in a small box.

In 2012, a young boy from Tanzania named Julius Bernard arrived in Israel for life-saving heart surgery. He was just a child.

This month, Julius returned to Israel one last time - for follow-up treatment with Save a Child’s Heart, the Israeli organization that has treated over 9,000 children from more than 75 countries.

He is now heading home to Tanzania to begin his university studies.
